Does anyone have an American Express Platinum card?

Asked by mowens (8403points) January 27th, 2010

As far as I can tell, the only reason someone would want to spend the extra 300 dollars a year on a platinum card for AMEX, is if they travel a lot. I have a Gold AMEX, and I love it. American Express really makes things easier for me. But I don’t see the reason to go to a platinum. Does anyone have one? Do you like it? Why didn’t you get the gold card?

I have an AMEX blue card not platinum. I will never pay to have a credit card. Never.

I do like AMEX so far. There are far less hassles with them than Capital One, that’s for sure!!

I do. I travel a lot. It’s worth it because I don’t need to pay for Admirals Club memberships, but just barely. When I got it, they also offered free companion seats when you flew.

Overall, I’ve been very disenchanted with Amex, except with their 90 day return-anything policy. The concierge is not useful.

It’s a big meh, overall.

It’s really worth it if you need lots of dinner, hotel, theatre etc. Personal shoppers, too. It’s best for someone who does lots of business entertaining and travel. Certain hotel chains offer full free breakfasts in their full scale restaurants. My boss uses it all the time and gets more back than he pays. I have had regular card (blue )for over 20 years and they are the best! Always stand behind a purchase or a service.

I carry a Platinum corporate card. Personally, I have AmEx issued by Bank of America, no annual fee plus earns rewards.

My boss has the AmEx Black… I get to use it buying big boy toys for him. . .. once I facilitated his purchase of a Bentley Continental GTC. I called up the dealer and asked to be put on the list. They said we needed to come down with a $10,000 deposit. I offered the AmEx Black (without saying that it was what it was), the guy chuckled and asked for the number…. he ran the number and got approval. He came back to the phone with a more respectful tone. Every month thereafter until the car was delivered, the guy would call me up providing updates on the status of the build. . . . You get a lot of respect in the nice places when you have the platinum AmEx. Most places don’t know about the AmEx Black and think that they’re fakes. . but among the creme dela creme, people in the know will bend over backwards for you. . . it’s a nice feeling.
