Gaslight (1944)

The term gaslighting was coined in the 1940 and 1944 remake of the movie Gaslight. In this movie the main character is made to believe she is crazy and imagining things by her husband so that he could gain access to her finances. He repeatedly lights a gas lamp in one part of the house, causing the other lamps in the house to become dimmer. When the main character in the movie confronts her husband about this, he repeatedly tells her that she is imagining things and that the lamps are not, in fact, dimmer.

From the 1944 film Gaslight the term “gaslighting” acquired the meaning of ruthlessly manipulating an individual into believing something other than the truth.

The jist of the movie is that a husband tries to make his wife seem insane in order to get her out of his way by getting her admitted to a mental hospital. He does this in subtle ways that cause her to doubt her own ability to interpret reality.

About this title: Ever been wronged by somebody you can’t strike back at? Being hassled by an obnoxious bureaucrat who has the law on his side, for example? The books in this section will show you a multitude of ways that you can get even with anybody and remain anonymous. We must warn you these books are sold for entertainment purposes only! Gaslighting means to drive someone crazy. It comes from the 1944 film Gaslight, in which a husband convinces his wife she’s losing her mind. Gaslighting is the most potent form of psychological warfare you can use without a license. In this book, Santoro shows you how to destroy your target’s confidence, self-esteem and reputation. Through a series of small incidents, your target gets progressively more confused, until he’s reduced to a shapeless mass of shivering, quivering jelly. It will show you how to cause disorientation, get your target off balance and build up his paranoia.

It’s most famous appearance in recent years is probably in the song “Gaslighting Abbie” (2000) by Steely Dan, which describes gaslighting as a “a luscious invention for three, one summer by the sea.” Their explanation of how to gaslight someone is as follows:

…we’ll do a fright night
With blood and everything
Some punky laughter from the kitchen
And then – a nice relaxing hand of solitaire
