Is the movie Hot Tub Time Machine worth watching?

Asked by JesusWasAJewbot (1510points) March 28th, 2010

I saw like a trailer or two but the movie really just looked dumb to me. I want to go out to the movies today but not really sure what to watch, this was the only thing suggested by a friend.

The title alone has alienated me.

Same, im thinking Green Zone with Matt Damon now.

If you think the trailer is dumb I doubt you will think anything more of the movie. Spend your money and time on something else as there are a lot of really good movies out there right now or opt for the hot tub movie if you just want dumb fun.

It’s called Hot Tub Time Machine. How could that be good?

Mikelbf2000's avatar

Looks retarded. Another dumb movie for the dumb masses

It’s called Hot Tub Time Machine. How could that be bad?

ok, it could suck. But it’s gonna cost me to find out. :)

Srsly? A movie with such a title was made on 2010? It sounds almost like a Mr Show parody of 70s movies. All it needs are streakers.

OK, I read the premise on Wikipedia, and all I can say is… the studios dump the films they suspect won’t do all that well on an unsuspecting American public between January and Memorial Day. I suppose they’ll at least recoup their costs on DVD. The (older) Apatow lovers out there might get into this.

the trailer looks lame

You know what you’re getting into with the title, but it has some funny people in it.
Craig Robinson and Rob Corddry are funny.

I have no clue, haven’t seen it.

Mikelbf2000's avatar

i dont know who those people are. movies today are not funny at all or even good, just a bunch of force fed garbage that they cram down our throats.

A deli in NYC was giving out free passes to Hot Tub a couple of months ago. The pass was good for only one night, and I would have gone if I didn’t have other plans that night. But if they have to give out free tickets to get people to see it, it’s got to be lame!

You are all so critical. It’s supposed to be stupid, it’s a comedy with a ridiculous plot. It looks funny nonetheless.

DarkScribe's avatar

@Parrappa It’s supposed to be stupid,

Comedy isn’t supposed to be stupid – it is supposed to be amusing.

I went to see it with my husband last night. I am 43 – same age the characters. I loved it. It was stupid fun. John Cusack still looks hot. Made me feel young, made me laugh. It’s not an oscar worthy film – of course not, I knew that going into it. Just reminded me of the “Say Anything”, “Breakfast Club” and “Sixteen Candles” movies of youth. After a long week…silliness just seemed the right movie pick for us.

It looks like another breakthrough comedy hit. Perhaps you should see it for yourself instead of listening to the opines of others who have also not yet seen the movie and are basing their opinion(s) on the opinions of yet others who have not yet seen the movie…

HungryGuy's avatar

@Sarcasm – That’s interesting. I give more credence to regular people than “critics.” Maybe I’ll rent it someday when I’m in an “Animal House” mood and give it a fair go :-p

AstroChuck's avatar

Twenty responses and not one who has actually seen the movie, including me. However, I have a friend who saw it and told me it was funny. To be fair, I don’t think Gerry has seen a film he hasn’t liked. So there you go. Go see it and let us know if we should as well. :)

AstroChuck's avatar

My mistake. Sorry, @MoneyMakingMommy. I missed your post on my first pass. Lurve to you for actually seeing the film.

@DarkScribe, isn’t comedy in the eye of the beholder?

jerv's avatar

I think it depends on whether you like ‘80s-style comedies.

The Seattle Times critic panned it, but she also is artsy enough to pan most movies, preferring stuff like opera or Schindler’s List. In other words, most of the bad reviews are from people who never wanted to watch it but had to because it’s their job.

HungryGuy's avatar

@Parrappa – In most dungeons I’ve ransacked, I’ve yet to battle a beholder that has comendy in its eye :-p

jerv's avatar

I don’t know whether to chuckle or groan….

JeanPaulSartre's avatar

@HungryGuy That’s cause to save the eyes you need to roll a critical eye saving roll.

I wouldn’t spend money on it but I’ll probably see it in my Net Flix queue at some point.

ubersiren's avatar

I think it looks funny. Some great comedic actors in it. I mean, it’s “one of those” comedies, so if you haven’t liked others like it, you probably wouldn’t like this one. I will probably Netflix it. But, I’d watch a cardboard box if John Cusack was in it.

Likeradar's avatar

I’m seeing it tonight. I’ll report back. :)

Likeradar's avatar

I just saw it. It’s a dumb movie, but funny dumb. It’s not the best funny/dumb movie out there. It has nothing on Zach and Miri or Old School or Superbad, but I definitley laughed out loud a few times.
If you like highbrow or subtle humor, don’t bother. But if you like raunchy silliness, it’s decent.

DarkScribe's avatar

@Parrappa DarkScribe, isn’t comedy in the eye of the beholder?

(No, that’s usually a bit of grit.)

Yes, we all have different tastes. Those Jackass movies appealed to many, they irritated me, I found no humour. If I hadn’t had to sit through one I wold not have done so.

MoneyMakingMommy's avatar

@Likeradar Totally agree. That was pretty much what I thought as well. BTW – Old School…I own that movie….makes me laugh every time I see it. Seriously funny. “Is KFC still open?” LOL
