Is anyone running windows 7 on one machine, with two or more XP machines on the same LAN?

Asked by UScitizen (4306points) April 6th, 2010

I’m considering loading windows 7 on one machine which is on a 3 machine home LAN. Will they play nicely together? Will any magic be required to get them to move files across the LAN?

I do that. So far, I haven’t had any issues (though I’m not a big fan of W7, too used to XP).

What magic do you speak of? If you mean saving files in another PC’s Shared/Public folder, no you do not need any magic, you just need to open up the all the Shared Folders for all to use. As a matter of fact, the Shared/Public Folders should be accessible to all by default.

Have several XP machines connected to a network with two Win7’s hooked up as well. Just allowed sharing on whatever needed to be shared and there hasn’t been any hiccups as of yet.

We have a home LAN with one PC on Win 7, one on XP and three on Vista, and they all play very nicely together except that the XP one can never see the printer for some reason we’ve never managed to figure out.

@downtide you probably have a XP Home version. If it were a Pro, you wouldn’t have any problem seeing network printers.

I think it probably is, but its only on a netbook and I’m not going to shell out ££s for another version. Its as easy to transfer the file over the network and print from the desktop.
