Best way to put belongings in storage?

Asked by moon_under_water (37points) June 4th, 2010

I’m moving out of my apartment at the end of June and don’t know where I’ll be moving to – and I will be traveling until the end of September, which gives me three months of storage. I have looked into PODS – any other suggestions?

If you are just storing stuff locally get a storage unit. Everything in a apartment can be stored for about 100 bucks a month if you pack it well.

any public storage facilities are good… i think with PODS you have to leave it somewhere, like parked? I’m not sure. put everything in clear plastic (Tupperware type) bins and label them so that when you unpack and remove, you will be organized – it will make everything easier. also, you could label the bins with numbers and then keep a list of what bin numbers have what inside of them… this is especially helpful if you’re hiring movers or having others help, so you can keep track of everything.

If you use a storage unit, you may wish to wrap the boxes in sturdy plastic trash bags – at least the ones on the bottom. A lot of them are semi-open to the elements, and mice and moisture could be a factor. (I don’t know what the “environmentally-controlled” ones are like, just the cheap ones, heh.) It will also help keep that “musty old storage unit” smell at bay if you stuff a dryer sheet in the box before wrapping it up.

If you’re putting stuff in there that’s too big to box up (like furniture), a painter’s drop cloth or slipcover would help keep off the dust and such, too.
