Do the manufactures of consumer goods deliberately make their packaging "open proof"?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46813points) July 21st, 2010

I can’t believe I’m wasting my last question on this, but I just spent about 10 minutes trying to wrestle the foil lid off of a couple of pudding snacks! I finally stabbed the suckers and won.

And, like, the way they seal toys and curling irons and things so you need a chain saw to open the package? WHY DO THEY DO THAT???!!! I can understand the anti theft thing, but doesn’t it seem awfully extreme at times?

I have wondered if it’s me, but i guess not. I think manufacturers do what’s cheap and what is displayable. i know anything with a blister pack, meaning anything with that hard plastic front and back requires scissors to open, no way around it.

What’s funny is at my store we’ve had people cut open the blister packs and steal certain items. Like they made a conscious effort to carry a box cutter or scissor with them to come into my workplace and rip us off. They still steal more condoms and pregnancy tests than anything tho.

My grandma can’t function without scissors. She can’t even open a bag of pretzels without scissors.

They might be “open proof”,but they are not “stomp proof”!which can be very effective in getting it open ;)

Sorry I’m stuck at the “I can’t believe I’m wasting my last question on this” part.. why is this your last question? :(

In the case of foods, I’m thinking there may be FDA rules designed to protect the contents from tampering, like in the legendary Tylenol case.

@HeatherGrace I hope that means the last one for the next few hours, because there is a limit to how many questions we can ask in a twelve hour period.

@lucillelucillelucille Not stomp proof! Cool, I can’t believe how much time I’ve wasted with knives and scissors on these little bastards. Thanks!

@HeatherGrace Yes, @YARNLADY is right! Last question I was allowed to ask for the day! Getting ready to ask my first question of the day now….
