Got vinyl?

Asked by rebbel (35553points) August 24th, 2010

Are you one that still have kept his/her records on vinyl?
Do you buy new artists’ music on vinyl still if they are published on it?
What was your first 7” or 12” record?
And your most beloved piece of vinyl 33rpm or 45rpm?
Got collectors items between them?

The first vinyl I bought I think was Nuclear Assault’s “Survive”
My personal favorite is Tokyo Blade’s “Night of the blade”, fun and cheesy NWOBHM at it’s best. Unfortunately, I don’t have any rare or collectors items :(

rebbel's avatar

@Michael_Huntington
They both sound as collectors items to me. never heard of them.

I have several dozens of old 45’s but not sure which was my first one. Could be Elvis; could be Sh-Boom. I know one of the oldest is Too Much by Elvis and Heartbreak Hotel.
Half are in the original case (1950’s) in the garage, the other half in the closet. cannot name my fav, though, either.

Tons, I rool.

First: Love Life by Berlin.

Coolest item: Lonley is an Eyesore compilation by 4AD, deluxe edition.

rebbel's avatar

My first 45 was Somebody To Love by Queen although my big brother always said that it was him who bought it, but it’s a lie and my first 33 must either have been a Queen album or Dynasty by Kiss.
My dearest is a double album from Chicago.

Yes, I have lots of records still and every once in a while I pull one out and actually play it because I still have a turntable and blaster Advent speakers, vintage 1973. The first record I ever bought was Cream’s Disraeli Gears Never did get into 45s though.

syz's avatar

My first 45 was Rubber Band Man. My first album was Poco (ugh). I had a lot of Queen.

I don’t have any of the records anymore.

gypsywench's avatar

yes, yes, yes and yes. Unfortunately all my records are in storage. I moved recently. I’m getting them next month. Most of the music I listen to is on vinyl :(

Michael_Huntington's avatar

@rebbel Yeah, I guess. The aforementioned Nuclear Assault album is pretty rare on CD (They haven’t reissued it yet), so it’s got to be rarer on vinyl!

My favorite piece of vinyl in my collection is Marvin Gaye Live at the London Palladium.

A friend and I were at a record store, some guy was selling his albums and the clerk didn’t want it. “What?! Are you crazy?!” I think we gave the guy $3.

Actually my buddy paid. So I should probably give it back to him. I borrowed it circa 1986.

2nd favorite is The Clash – London Calling. I bought it the first day it was available and I still listen often to the MP3s I ripped from it

Nice stuff, @all!

A Buddy Holly one, can’t remember the name. I’ll make sure to find it when I get home this Thanksgiving though.

jonsblond's avatar

I do! I just came across several that I put away years ago. The Clash, Depeche Mode, General Public and Grease are just a few of them. My ex BIL was a disc jockey way back when and gave me a great collection.

I have all sorts of vinyl. My first album was the sound track to 2001 A Space Odyssey and still have it. But my prized possessions are my 22 Frank Zappa albums in mint condition.

I also some have records just for shit’s and giggles. The ones that just crack me up, either because of the artist or the cover or the music. Such as Stryper, Tiny Tim. I have alot of records. I wouldn’t know where to start. I have Classics like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Kiss, Run DMC, Beastie Boy’s and David Bowie, lot’s of Cure, Duran Duran and of coarse Micheal Jackson. I also have alot punk, Crass, Dead Kennedy’s, Ramones, Floggy Molly, Suicidal Tendecies, Operation Ivy, Misfists, NOFX. Then I also have Siouxsie and the Banshees, The glove, Bauhuas, Joy Division, The Sugar Cubes. The I have bands like, Lightening Bolt, and The Locust, Oh, and some Bob marley, and I have Soundtracks, such as A Clockwerk Orange, Good and the bad the Ugly, Pulp Fiction. As well as, Buddy Holly, Billie Holiday, Robert Johnson, Frank Sinatra, Sam Davis Jr, Bach, Ella Fitzgerald, Harry Belafonte, Miriam Makeba. Some, Nick cave and the badseeds, The Birthday Party, Einstürzende Neubauten , Can, Sonic Youth, NEU, T-Rex, Roxy Music, Brian Eno, Bjork, Elliot Smith, Bikini Kill, Hole, Babes in Toyland, Jane’s Addiction, Samantha Fox, Sigar Ros…..this just from the top of my head. I have more.

rebbel's avatar

@gypsywench
Samantha Fox, everybody should have her :-) i only had a centerfold of her.
Otherwise a quite impressive collection!

@Cruiser thanks. @rebbel thanks so much for asking this question. I just popped Humble Pie Performance Rockin’ the Filmore and I’m about 5 minutes into their 24:30 minute version of I Walk on Gilded Splinters. LOL.

My dad’s vinyl got me into Classic Rock.

My first vinyl tunes were “Frampton Comes Alive!” and KISS “Alive”, the first one. I still have every LP I have ever owned. They are in my Grandmother’s basement 2000 miles away. Along with a DUAL 731Q record machine. Someday I will make a point to retrieve them all.

sweetteaindahouse's avatar

I can’t remember what my first album was but it was either Band on the Run or Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. I bought them off eBay along with several other records. The rest of mine I bought from actual record stores. I actually bought Smashing Pumpkin’s Siamese Twin album last weekend. I love listening to vinyls but I just wish I had a vinyl to mp3 converter so I wouldn’t have to get my music twice.

mrentropy's avatar

I don’t know if I still have records or not; they were left behind at my parents house when I moved. The first might very well have been a Night Ranger album. Or Styx.

Nothing rare or collectible that I know of, unless it’s a Slits album that I was tricked into taking.

jaytkay's avatar

I think people should specify:

1) I have vinyl because I am old
– or -
2) I bought vinyl as an interesting anachronism

PS I am old (mid-40s)

lillycoyote's avatar

@jaytkay Why should people have to specify? Who made you the thread policeman? Well, if you insist… I have vinyl because I myself am an both old and an interesting anachronism and therefore I surround myself with other old and interesting anachronisms.

jaytkay's avatar

@lillycoyote I would wager 90% of vinyl owners are in two very different groups – people who bought their records years ago before CDs existed and people who buy records today to experience something different from the norm.

This is my favorite album of my collection. I got two copies for free from the band before they broke up.

stranger_in_a_strange_land's avatar

Hundreds of them. I also have many 78s and a few dozen Edison cylinders. I’ve had the content of some of these transferred to CD, minimizing wear on the media. My first new record purchase was Pink Floyd’s “Piper at the Gate of Dawn”. There were hundreds of classical recordings at home, so no need to buy them.

lillycoyote's avatar

@jaytkay or people who buy vinyl because digital, or god forbid mp3 really can’t beat the sound, can’t beat the depth and soul of vinyl. And to be honest, I will dare anyone, with any modern speakers, even Bose, to match the power, the sound, the warmth and the wallop, or whatever of my 1973 Advents. They don’t make them like that anymore.

lillycoyote's avatar

@lillycoyote I have a lot of 78s too and I have my grandmother’s wind up Victrola though it is in pieces. I have all of them, in the attic. My dad was in the process of refinishing and refurbishing, put it way back on the back burner, in terms of projects, and died before he finished. I’m not sure what to do with it all. I guess I need to round up all the pieces and find someone who can put it back together for me.

lillycoyote's avatar

Oops! Re:the above. As much as I like to hear the sound of my own “voice,” I certainly didn’t mean to address that to myself. That was supposed to be a response to @stranger_in_a_strange_land.

stranger_in_a_strange_land's avatar

@lillycoyote There are people who restore those old wind ups. I have enough skill to keep mine running, but I’m not sure if I could reconstruct one from loose parts. Shenandoah did an excellent job on my Edison Reproducer (1903 cylinder-type).

lillycoyote's avatar

@stranger_in_a_strange_land These people? I guess I could contact them. Oklahoma is a long way off but I could at least find out how much is would cost. Most of what my Dad was doing was refinishing the wood. It was in working condition before he took it apart. I maybe could do it myself. It’s not computerized. :-) of course, just mechanical. I should get up in the attic and at least try to find all the pieces. That would be a start.

ucme's avatar

Kept some but most got lost or chucked. First single bought, Relax : FGTH, 12” Blue Monday : New Order.

shpadoinkle_sue's avatar

I’m in vinyl limbo right now. It sucks. I haven’t enough room for the set up and no needle for the player. I’m building up my collection with this place I found in Portland called Vinyl Resting Place. I’ve got some AC/DC, Blondie, Pink Floyd, Yma Sumac, Cheech and Chong, some showtunes. The pride of my collection is an orginal stage recording of Porgy and Bess from the 1930’s my grandmother gave me. I intend to guard that one with my life.
