What kind of thoughts and feelings do you have on your birthday?

Asked by Deja_vu (4157points) October 19th, 2010

It’s my birthday and I noticed every year I feel the same emotions and have the same thoughts. First, I think of time, second I think of what I can do to better the next year.
Your birthday is your own person New Years. How does it make you feel?

On my last birthday (#22) I fought tears all day because it was my first birthday away from my family and I didn’t get very much attention.

I miss having my mom make me what ever I wanted for dinner.

Usually disappointment because I don’t feel any different from the way I did the day before.

I was just thinking about this.

I actually hate my birthday and can’t figure out why. The thing is I don’t understand why anyone should get to together to celebrate it with me. I find it unimportant and nothing exciting whatsoever.

It is extremely disappointing because it’s just any other day. My own personal New Years you say? Maybe that’s why I hate New Years too.

I appreciate why people say Happy Birthday to me on the day, but I actually hate people saying it. Again I don’t know why.

Birthdays have never been a big deal to me. My family does the cake and presents thing, but it’s never felt like an event. I always think “Oh… I am no longer _ age. Okay.” I don’t feel anxiety as the day approaches, when it arrives, or when it has passed.

I remember clearly thinking that I would feel different when I turned ten (double digits!) and then again at thirteen. By the time I turned eighteen (voting age) and twenty (shedding the “teen” suffix) I ceased waiting to feel an internal clicking with aging.

The majority of people I know have been freaking the hell out about birthdays lately. They keep saying how they feel and how little they’ve accomplished, but few do anything to reconcile these sentiments.

I’ve had 67 of them so far, and each one is different. I usually wonder if anyone is going to notice, and usually only one or two people do.

I always think I can’t believe how fast the years go by.

Maybe I’m still too young, but I always have good feelings on my birthday. It’s an excuse to have fun in my name.

Happy Birthday! by the way. :D

@Deja_vu

Firstly, Happy Birthday! The world changed when you dropped in. It IS a special day. If others forget…please be sure to do something for yourself. Meet a stranger…take a stranger to dinner, if friends and family aren’t available. I love birthdays and always try to make the ones I know about special.

Don’t be sad if you feel forgotten. Don’t wallow in that whole deal. Look in the mirror and do something wonderful for that person.

Hi deja_vu, im new to this community as you can see, i agree with dominic and missA. i grew up in a house where birthdays and holidays werent celebrated, so i dont expect or miss anybody making a fuss over me. i usually set it aside as a day for me. i hope it doesnt sound selfish, but it is the yearly mark of the day I recieved life. I do what i wanna do which usually involves asking the day off from work and either kickin it with friends or by myself if thats the mood im in. I used to party alot more than i do now (being 30 and all) but i still enjoy drinking occasionally and it being my birthday i see it as a rare acceptable excuse to have a buzz pretty much all day lol. i had some apprehension on my 27th because it was the year i became closer to 30 than 25, but 28, 9, and 30 didnt bother me at all. it should definitely be a happy day. the only reason i can think of why it wouldnt be is regret, for things not done as you feel the next tick of the clock. could have, would have, should have…. JUST DO IT!

My b-day was two Sundays ago, and all I could think was “this sucks.”

daytonamisticrip's avatar

I’m a little late but happy birthday.
My thoughts and feelings are the same as every other day. The only difference is that I’m going to have cake and ice cream and my grandma, grandpa, uncle, and aunt will all crowd the house.
