Crafty Jellies: Can you recommend a high quality glue gunfor me?

Asked by KatawaGrey (21483points) November 3rd, 2010

I am interested in getting into more crafts and it seems that a good hot glue gun is absolutely necessary for someone who wants to get crafty.

So, crafty Jellies, what glue gun would you suggest for me?

A cheap one. Seriously. I bought one the cheapest one I could find (don’t remember the brand) at a craft store for my Halloween costume a few years ago and it’s just as good as any more expensive one other crafty friends have.

@Likeradar: I kind of figured that was the best way to go honestly, it’s the best way to go for a lot of things but seeing as I can get a bunch on Amazon for a few bucks, I thought maybe there might a be a brand that is honestly higher quality and that i could treat myself. :)

One thing I’d look for (and I don’t even know if this exists, for sure) is some kind of stop mechanism. My cheap no-name gun has worked just fine for like 15 years, but it does have a tendency to kind of… dribble. So if you see one that has some sort of ‘cut off’ function, snatch it up.

Hey, people, careful with the advice, here, she wants to glue my mouth shut!
Seriously, MyMouse, look into what @augustlan said, I’ve heard that dribbling complaint from others.

Hot glue guns are okay for some things but not all projects. You want to have E6000 on hand as well as Gorilla Glue, Crazy glue, Wood glue and elmers glue and Mod podge. E6000 and crazy glue are great for a more permanent bond. I have found that hot glue will peel. There are also silicon glues that you can’t get off to save your life. I haven’t used them in awhile but a craft stores will have each. I have two glue guns…one uses small sticks and the other big sticks for bigger jobs.

Yeah, the cheap guns usually work just fine. There are different grades of hot melt glue sticks. Some of used for projects that need less adhesion (like with fabric) and then there are others that provide a much stronger hold for gluing wood or metal pieces to other objects, or when objects are attached in a way in which they need to hang out in space or off the side of another object and remain in place (like with a sculpture). Usually someone at the craft store will be able to tell you which one is which.

I’m going to start making mosaics, that’s my newest craft that I’m going to try!

I got the Adhesive Tech Ultimate at Michael’s Crafts, but I’ve never even opened it. I sew most of my pieces by hand, and when I need glue, I use the bottled craft glue.
