What is it that is so appealing about peanut butter and jelly?

Asked by josie (30934points) December 13th, 2010

I am pretty selective about what I eat, not because I am finicky about flavor, but for wellness reasons.
Still, I occasionally enjoy a PB, and J sandwich, with a glass of milk so cold it makes my teeth hurt.
What is it about that combination that is so appealing?
An association with childhood?
The combination of flavors?
What?

The combination is salt and sweet, and the jello-like nature of jelly plays well with the fudge-like thickness of peanut butter. The textures and salt/sweet combo feels and tasts nummy. Plus, it’s a comfort food from childhood, when mom/dad/other packed it in the lunchbox – no ice needed.

Nothing. I have never had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. My husband had his first about 10 years ago, when he was in his early thirties. He likes it. He uses Strawberry jam though.

@JLeslie What are you waiting for?

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

It’s such an easy recipe to follow ;)

Mamradpivo's avatar

It’s just goddam amazing. What’s the problem, really?

cak's avatar

Probably the fact that I shouldn’t eat it is why I like it so much! Peanut butter leads to serious migraines for me, so I gotta want the pain, which I never really want. Try a toasted PB & J. Perfection. drooling now

JLeslie's avatar

@josie I’m not fond of peanut butter so why bother? Cold sandwiches are not my thing either, I am very picky about cold food.

Ever try peanut butter and dill pickles?

Natural peanut butter and jelly. Salty and sweet.

Seaofclouds's avatar

I don’t like jelly, so it’s not appealing to me. I like peanut butter and Nutello sandwiches though.

It’s just so delicous. It’s really great when the jelly soaks into the bread. It’s just one of those perfect combinations of favors. Grape jelly and smooth Jif for me, on wheat bread please. And absolutely with a glass of really cold milk.

It tastes good.

Depends on the peanut butter, the jelly and the bread. I like peanut butter without sugar or salt. I like jelly with some serious flavor. I like thick slices of sourdough bread. Not sure about the milk. Maybe a root beer. Maybe chocolate milk.

oopsifluthered's avatar

It’s a mouthful of gooey goodness is what it is.

Trillian's avatar

” Maybe a root beer. Maybe chocolate milk.” Now that’s just wrong!

I’m in the toasted camp with my PB&J and, I like blackberry jam the best.

And, even better…PB & spun honey on toast! OMG!

Yes, with icey cold milk. I only like milk with sweets, otherwise no.

Another great one is PB and saltine sandwiches and OJ.

cak's avatar

@wundayatta Seriously? Milk is the only answer! Don’t argue with me, I’m just right, this time.

josie's avatar

@wundayatta
Root beer?
Dude….

Coloma's avatar

@josie

I know, that’s OBSCENE! hahaha

@wundayatta

Sorry. :-)

I love dipping green apples in peanut butter.

chyna's avatar

I love PB&J sandwiches. It brings back my childhood. Sorry to disagree on the milk. I haven’t drank milk since I was in about 3rd grade. Don’t like the taste.

Coloma's avatar

Peanut butter s’mores…I might have to go out to the store soon. lol

talljasperman's avatar

how about peanut butter and macaroni?

Coloma's avatar

Macaroni?

Hmm..I’d have to ponder this for awhile. Um, no, I cant quite embrace that combo. hahaha

YARNLADY's avatar

It’s very easy to make, and nutritious. My husband hates it, but I and my grandsons like it.

Doppelganger19's avatar

Comfort food—reminds me of school days. Funny thing is, when I get the rare urge and buy the stuff, I really don’t much like it anymore.

Trillian's avatar

@Tink Try dipping green or Fuji apple slices in caramel.

Tink's avatar

@Trillian I’m not a big caramel fan, but I have tried it before :)

Coloma's avatar

@Trillian
knows her apples!

Mmmm caramel apples. :-)

Trillian's avatar

What the hell is going on around here? First @wundayatta has the audacity to suggest root beer as a go-along for PB&J, and now you’re gonna stand there and tell me you don’t like caramel? When will the madness end? (Curls into a fetal ball with thumb in mouth, whimpering “make it stop…. make it stop”)

chyna's avatar

@Trillian I drink diet pepsi with my PB&J sandwiches

Tink's avatar

We’re slowly driving @Trillian mad.

Coloma's avatar

@chyna and @Wundayatta are hereby banned for all eternity from any involvement with any gourmet PB&J club. lol

That’s it, I’m out. I have a date with my deck chair and some coffee. The Geminids are putting on a display for my entertinment tonight and I don’t want them to think that it’s all been for nothing. I’m off to find a blanket that I can take outside and some chapstick. Ciao y’all. Enjoy you PB&J in whatever foul, depraved way you see fit. @chyna, @Tink, girls; You’re still ok with me., @Coloma Thank god for you.;-)
@Tink, to be absolutely fair, I didn’t have far to go!

Coloma's avatar

@Trillian

The GEMINIDS! Thanks for the reminder, I’m going out too!

Peanut butter and jelly is similar to sweet and sour sauce for your chicken nuggets.

They just go together.

oopsifluthered's avatar

@talljasperman Have you tried toasted pb&j with american cheese? It’s a great midnight snack. especially after a few beers ;)

There’s a restaurant in my city that puts peanut butter and mayonaise on burgers. It sounds hideous, but it’s divine once you try it.

I just made a cold soba noodle salad with a spicy, garlicky, peanut butter sauce for an Xmas potluck. It was soooooo yummy.

I love peanut butter and I eat PB & J sammiches at least once a week. My favorite jellies are boysenberry and orange marmalade. It’s just sweet and slightly salty and oh, so soft. It’s also comforting.

It would be so nice to take a nap on a giant PB & J sandwich.

Jeruba's avatar

By me, nothing. Nothing.

wundayatta's avatar

I don’t like plain or cold milk. Didn’t any of you grow up?

[ducks and covers]

Dutchess_III's avatar

I like peanut butter and honey.
