Musically, what artists or groups will be the classics of the last 100 years?

Asked by ETpro (34605points) December 30th, 2010

I stumbled onto this recording of Pink Floyd’s Hits. It’s over an hour of music, but I highly recommend it if you’ve got the Time (pardon the pun). I expect that this is one group that was original enough and creative enough that their music will be appreciated hundreds of years in the future. Who do you think should be on the list. Who will be the Bachs and Beethovens of the age of popular music?

This isn’t really my type of music much, but that’s just it…he’s great enough to attract many people. I vote for Johnny Cash and I base my answer in relation to what you ask on the idea, although I may be wrong but I’d kinda doubt it, that a lot of ’‘badass’’ modern lyrics from many genres from metal to pop, were influenced by ghosts riding undead cattle.

And I mean this in a good way. Johnny Cash fuckin rocks, and I believe that his work has influenced much and many enough to be remembered until humanity dies. Maybe this is a bit older than what you’re asking, but I just want to stress that he’ll never die. He didn’t listen to those ghosts, did he?
I like to think he has. :)

Otherwise, this The lyrics, if taken the time to be listened to, are quite deep. Yeah yeah, flame away lol. If nothing else, it’s totally using an older classic song lol. XD

The Doors.

Jim Morrison died before I was born. Discovering The Doors’ music felt so fresh to me in the 90s.

(Pink Floyd is SO my favorite group, I have the Back Catalogue on my living room wall – nicely framed of course)

This could be many artists. but, if you go back in time and do the research, i think you will discover that only one artist was the orginal and his music has been copied over and over again by many of todays artists. who is this “one-man music marvel?”.

Chuck Berry.

@Symbeline No argument from me on putting Johnny Cash on the list. He is definitely one of the greats.

@jazmina88 Thanks.

@iLove Good point on Hendrix. If he isn’t on the list, it’s definitely because he died way too soon. What a shooting star.

@john65pennington Chuck Berry’s influence on the direction of recent music was huge. GA.

@mattbrowne Thanks.

John Cage. This is probably his magnum opus.

I appreciated the Time pun! Pink Floyd will definately be remembered 100 years down the road, and I think the same can easily be said for The Beatles.
