Do you let what other people think and do influence what you do?

Asked by Aesthetic_Mess (7894points) January 30th, 2011

I do, but I don’t know if it’s a fault or not. I always look at what everyone else does, and I take their opinions to heart and influence what I think, and what I’m going to do.
For example, when people from Pennsylvania and New Jersey move down South, I get to thinking that maybe I’m crazy for wanting to move back up there.
It’s usually stuff like that that I let influence me, and then I get conflicted and don’t know what to do.

There’s a difference between following someone else and having their choices influence yours. I attempt to think for myself and proceed accordingly.

Absolutely. To do otherwise is tantamount to assuming you’re right.

But, I try, as much as possible, to approach it critically. Of course, there are certain things that I do simply because it’s easiest to go with the status quo – where appropriate clothes for my gender as society dictates, don’t wear makeup, etc.

No. I prefer to be the guy that influences what others think and do.

How can you not to a certain extent?

Of course I do. @iamthemob answered it beautifully.

Only a handful of intelligent and caring people. Everyone else can screw.

To a certain extent, yes. Overall, I bring it back to myself and I weigh things up and make decisions based on how I feel and what’s right for me.
