ITunes help?

Asked by Randy (11232points) February 7th, 2011

Anytime I try to access the iTunes store my computer begins to slow down to a creep and eventually iTunes quits responding and I have to “Force Quit” it. It’s not my internet connection as my browser works just fine. Any idea as to what could cause this and how to remedy the situation?
I’m using iTunes version 10.1.2.

That sounds about like my experience with the Windows version of iTunes, Quicktime, and Safari, or surfing the iTunes Store with any browser. And based on that personal experience, I suspect that the problem is inherent to the Apple software, especially the iTunes portion of it.

As for remedies, there really aren’t any that I can think of or even find via Google; I have yet to hear of anybody who had such issues and managed to successfully clear them up. It seems like either everything works just fine or is irrevocably b0rked.

Could it possibly be the Apple Software Updater? Since you’re making an internet connection when you use the store, this could be the point when iTunes decides to check for updates. This would concur with @jerv having problems with Safari and Quicktime as well as iTunes.

Go to “Start -> All Programs -> Apple Software Update” and see if you get a similar problem. If you do, try uninstalling it. iTunes may require it to run, so you may have to reinstall it, but hey, it’s worth a shot.

@jerv That’s what I was afraid of. I’ve tried everything I can think of. I may just have to wipe my hard drive or just deal with it. Although neither of those sounds pleasant.

@chromaBYTE Everything is up to date. I’m using OS X 10.5.8. and iTunes version 10.1.2. Actually, come to think of it, I believe this all stated when I updated iTunes an update or two back.

Ahh.. I have the same computer. You don’t have to do anything. Itunes just has a slow browser and responding program.

@aidoom7 You would think that a modern computer running multiple cores at 2–3GHx would be faster at real-world tasks (like browsing) than a 16Mhz 486SX or 68000, but software seems to bloat faster than CPUs improve :/

I have an acer aspire one computer and it even runs slow on one of the fastest computers around.

@aidoom7 Apple software also runs slow on my i3 desktop; I can’t imagine how it runs on an Aspire One. I used to have an Aspire One, and while it could do more than one would expect from a netbook, it had it’s limits.

When was the last time you cleaned junk files from your hard drive or defragged?

It may not completely solve your problem but it definitely won’t hurt.

(CCleaner is freeware you might want to try.)

I’m not downloadin any freeware after my expierenence with Virus PUP Elf 1.15 freeware toolbar.

@aidoom7 Freeware is fine as long as it comes from reputable sources. That is akin to saying that you will never buy a used car because some sleazy crack-head sold you a junker.

Browser toolbars are often bad news in general, and no-name software that isn’t tested and approved of by experts is dicey. However, CCleaner is a respected program from a reputable company, so you have nothing to fear from it. In fact, I trust CCleaner and DeFraggler (another program from the same company) more than I trust anything from Microsoft!

Yeah, I always uninstall and decline search bars if possible.

Get rid of iTunes. It’s pure garbage.

Try CopyTrans Manager as an alternative. Not great but a little more “normal”.
