Legally, can you make someone leave an apartment complex (detail)?

Asked by MyNewtBoobs (19059points) March 1st, 2011

I know that if you have trouble getting someone to leave your apartment, you can call the cops on them. But what if someone isn’t in your apartment, but rather in the apartment complex (and they don’t live there)? Can you call the cops to have them removed still? If not, who can?

If they are disturbing you, you can call the police.

@iamthemob But if they’re just out there, quietly, staring at your door, or lurking around…?

If they are acting in a suspicious manner or being loud and obnoxious, you can make a complaint to the police as well as the property manager of the apartment complex.

Call. Explain the situation. Exactly what @Seaofclouds – if you’re suspicious of them, they’re acting suspiciously. The police will thereafter judge the risk associated and whether and what amount of effort to expend.

Also, call the apartment complex management and tell them there are loiterers lurking on the property. They will have more standing with the police.

Contact the apartment manager asap. If the person is suspicious (lurking due to theft/arson??) call 911.

What if there is no apartment manager, and the landlord is out of town?

@MyNewtBoobs – Just call the police. If you’re worried, better safe than sorry. The police will deal with the situation accordingly.

@MyNewtBoobs Call the police and tell them the situation and that you tried to contact the landlord, but he is out of town.

Who would you be calling right now if you had an emergency in the apartment? If there is someone set up, call them, if not, just call the cops and explain the situation to them. I would think there should be someone else available for issues with your apartment for while your property manager is out of town.

Likely, you were given an emergency number when you moved in. I’d call it now. The call should go directly to the maintenance man, or a leasing agent on site. Someone on your property needs to be alerted besides the police (the police do not always contact the landlord/property manager when they’ve come out for a call).

Yup – if someone is making you feel uncomfortable in your home, you have the right to call the police. Explain the situation regarding your landlord – they’ll take care of Mr. Creepo.

An apartment complex is private property – call the police and have them removed. The fact that they are right outside of your door staring would be a good thing to mention while you’re on the phone with dispatch. Get a good description before you call too.

(Offly, it could be some dumb fellow with a crush. Then again, it’s past midnight where I’m at . . . not exactly the hour to declare one’s secret longings.)
(Offly too, what is the weather like? It may be that they’re trying to get warm before moving on—this may resolve itself.)
