Is the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine a scam?

Asked by Sunshine1245_1190 (144points) March 11th, 2011

I got an email today saying I was nominated, but then googled it and people are saying it is a scam. It says its only the top 1% of high school students, and I’m only a freshman so I’m confused how I got accepted and the upperclassmen didn’t?

From what I’ve heard about it, it’s not a scam (more of a sales pitch), but it may not be worth the cost. It all depends on the experience you get out of it. I would talk to your parents and your teachers about it to get more information. If you were nominated, then someone at your school should know something about it.

According to wikipedia they say they only recruit the top 1% but don’t actually screen anybody so it’s probably pot luck you got picked.

If you are thinking about a career in medicine then it may be worth attending.

If you’re thinking about a career in medicine, shadowing a physician one on one is the best thing to do, in my opinion. Then you can see what it’s like “on the front lines.”

See who is sponsoring it and then check out that organization. Also check what they are specifically offering. You can judge better on that than any sales pitch. Also, if it costs money, be careful that you are buying something that you really want. Good luck.
