Do you make the majority of your daily decisions based on science or your gut?

Asked by Blondesjon (33994points) April 25th, 2011

Trust me, I’m a firm believer that the Earth is round, gravity sucks, and the lifespan of the average housefly is 24 hours. I want antibiotics when I have an infection and when the weather is bad I don’t wrack my brain trying to figure out how I have angered the gods. Bill Nye is the fucking man!

With that said, 90% of my decisions are made without the assistance of any kind of scientific method or rigorous testing. I make them with my gut and it is seldom wrong.

You?

Neither, usually on my heart’s feelings…

My gut. I have found that if I don’t I’m usually in trouble.

What if your gut is science? OH SHI-

I think Science—I’m a logical thinker. Some things are gut, though, but usually after Science has been considered.

I’m not a logical thinker, I just do the do, whatever, whenever. And I like it like that.

I don’t have to think much about most of my decisions. I have adopted policies (which I have thought about) that allow me to decide based on a previously considered policy, with very little thought required. If you live most of your life rationally, have a decent memory, and are more than a few years old, you’ve probably been doing much the same – maybe without even thinking about it at a conscious level.

I don’t dig logic much, so my gut.

Both. It depends on the situation.

…decisions based on science or your gut?

Tarot Cards, Tea Leaves, Chicken Bones, Dice and The Magic Eight Ball
I’m dumping them all and going with my gut.

Or easier…
Just do what my wife tells me….

It depends on the decision. Some of the best decisions I have made have been based on a gut feeling. Other times I carefully weigh things up after researching available ideas and information.

Science. Always.

Neither. I do what Miss Cleo tells me to do.

It really truly depends. Situations of the heart I always go with the gut because if I don’t, over thinking the situation takes over and trouble begins…always go with the gut there. All other situations require past experiences as a guide and or more information and more facts…and the more facts the better the decision and generally the better the outcome. Once you have all the facts there is no longer doubt and I can successfully pull the trigger without any doubt, reservations or regrets.

My gut. I encounter problems when I go against it. Naturally, I stick with logic when it’s appropriate.

It depends on the situation.

Almost everything I do is spontaneous, how I feel in that particular moment decides my actions. Fuck science & all of it’s affiliates, I like to live on the edge…...a slight concern coz i’m shit scared of heights.

Well, here’s the thing. (and you should read the book Blink for more)..I read a lot every day, a lot of it having to do with science, etc..when I make a gut reaction, I know it’s based on a lot of information that my mind has stored so I don’t really distinguish between the two.

I would have to say the ole brain stores a lot of stuff, and sometime what one thinks is theirs, really isn’t. So, I definitely am influenced by everything I see, touch and hear whether I know it or not. But yes my ego always falls back into that safe haven of beliefs that were nurtured way into my marrow. Damn demons are hard to get rid of some times.
