Creative date ideas in the Outer Banks, NC?

Asked by gorillapaws (30519points) May 23rd, 2011

I’m heading to Duck in NC tomorrow with a girl I’ve been dating for about 2 months or so. We’re staying in a huge beach-house with my best friend, his family (parents, in-laws, several kids, etc.), and a few other couples our age (there’s going to be like 15+ people there).

I was hoping to sneak off at least once or twice during the week to do something fun and one-on-one with my girlfriend (she’s being a great sport agreeing to be surrounded by my friends for almost a week, after-all). Any ideas for something not too expensive that is creative and fun? Obviously I plan on walks on the beach and the usual, but perhaps you guys can think of some clever suggestions.

Any nice fishing grounds there? If neither of you knows how it might be fun goofing off learning how to fish. And bring a nice full of romantic stuff picnic basket.

A few suggestions on the cheap side:
* Head south to Kill Devil Hills to the Wright Brothers memorial and hike up the sand dunes. Take a kite with you.
* Head north to Corolla and take a tour of the historic Whalehead Club and the Corolla Lighthouse. You can also bring along a bucket, some chicken legs/wings and string and go crabbing on the sound’s pier. There is a wonderful boardwalk between the club and the lighthouse that is great for bird-watching, especially the Osprey. They can often be seen skimming the surface of the water in order to capture fish.
* Get up really early and head to the beach to watch the sun rise out of the ocean.

If you can afford it, go tandem wind-surfing on the sound side. You could also ask the group to chip in to rent a kayak for the week. It’s magical to go out on the ocean in one and have the dolphins swim close-by.

Rent bikes and ride the beach, take a blanket and sit in a secluded spot to just watch the surf then head to town to window shop and grab a grilled cheese.

I would go to the Elizabethan Gardens on Manteo, then stop at Weeping Radish up near you for a summer wheat beer or take her for a frozen custard in Kill Devil Hills—it is yummy—
There are alot of art galleries around to check out and many restaurants.
Another cool thing is to go to the little airport near Kitty Hawk and take a plane tour of the sound. You can also rent fishing poles and gear to fish off one of the piers too.
Pea Island has the bird sanctuary.Make sure to bring bug spray.Right across from there is a beach that I rarely ever see another person. It is so beautiful there.
Have fun!:)

Here’s a listing for some wonderful Restaurants in Duck. Maybe a wine bar and some dinner could be on your itinerary?

@lucillelucillelucille The Weeping Radish is a great idea except they moved to Jarvisburg on Route 158 going back towards Virginia.
Carolina Brewing Station is in Kill Devil Hills.
