How can people eat uncooked fish?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) June 10th, 2011

E coli and Salmanella exist in abundance in uncooked fish. So why would anyone want to eat uncooked fish and take the chance of food poisioning? Each year about 1.3 million people become infected with E coli and Salmanella bacteria, so why take the chance? Question: so, what is the big attraction that draws people to eat uncooked fish?

Read this article. Basically it says there is a SMALL incidence of either in fresh raw fish, in the USA. I’ve eaten raw fish for almost sixty years.

It has been part of the culture of some people hundred years ago. I think mercury residue is much an issue compare to salmonella for most people.

I was visiting my son in Seattle two years ago. We went to this really nice restaurant, right on the oceans shore. I ordered halibut.

As I used my fork for the fist bite, something pink, shiny and curled in a circle, greeted me inside the halibut…....................A PINK WORM !!

I got to thinking, well, if their was a pink, round worm in my cooked halibut, how can anyone eat fish that is raw?

How do people eat uncooked fish?

Well, personally I eat it on a small bundle of rice with a dab of wasabi and wrapped in nori.

What makes fish Sushi or Sushimi grade (in these modern times) is the fact that it has been flash frozen. Flash freezing does not change the texture as it does not cause crystals that damage the cellular structure of the fish so that it is just as palatable when thawed as when it was flash frozen. In its frozen state it can be stored for long periods without spoiling and can be shipped anywhere. In addition the freezing process kills any parasites that might have already been in the fish prior to freezing.

I eat it with chopsticks, unless it’s ceviche,. which is “cooked” in lime juice. I also love raw oysters, shucked in front of me.

For me, it’s safer than feed-lot drug filled beef.

Why do we have to cook everything we eat?? Many things raw is better for you! Raw is good!

Open your mouth. Insert fish. Close mouth. Chew.

@Cruiser Yes, you’re right! Fruits and veggies are the best when eaten raw. Other than those…

The problem with modern lives is everything is so sterile that we build up no resistance to things that should be relatively harmless. I eat raw fish (as sushi) and I have never got sick from it.

Sushi, at least traditionally, had enough vinegar in it to preserve the piece of fish, effectively pickling the outside. Stuff like that helps.

Of course, I’m wondering how anyone can eat raw veggies that come from industrial farms now. I’ll trust the local gardens, thanks.

You can get the same worms and bacterias from eating raw fruits and vegetables. I’ve bitten into raw apples and found worms. A bunch of people in Germany just got e Colin from eating some raw vegetables. Raw foods taste good to a lot of people. Cooking foods breaks down some of the nutrients and other beneficial things in them. Eating fast food has frequently made me feel sick and have diarrhea and I can never recall getting sick from eating fresh sushi. Don’t eat old ass ishable foods raw.

Uncooked fish is an acquired taste.

Just like others like fried potatoes while other crave marshmallows.
