Well, it was epicenter Mineral VA and was a magnitude 5.8. Here is MD, it shook our building pretty good.

Oh yes. I was like ‘Grandma, get into the doorway!’...now the cats are all freaked out and fluffed up. Brooklyn, NY

rebbel's avatar

Wow, two quakes in the same time, or is it felt in different major cities?

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

It was pretty widespread. Someone else was talking to someone in NC that felt it at the same time.

Blackberry's avatar

Yep, it was funny because all of my friends on the east coast all posted on facebook at the same time. My entire apartment shook.

Jude's avatar

Now, being said that it was a 6.0.

There are ambulances I’m hearing all over the neighborhood. I called the daycare, all the kids are crying, just got scared, they’re going to the park now for some fresh air and open spaces. Whew.

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/Quakes/at00lqe6x3.php Here’s the USGS link. I just posted a question about it because I didn’t see this one. Yeah, I felt here in Northern Delaware. Not some you feel around here very often.

Jude's avatar

Nothing here in my city. I had a friend who felt it in Toronto. Nikki is around 15 miles from me and felt it.

DarlingRhadamanthus's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir….....Hope you and the kids are okay! @Jude…that was a 6.0????

Wow. Hope everyone is okay…over on the other side of the pond….

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@DarlingRhadamanthus I’m okay, mom and grandma are okay. I’m going to go the park to debrief the kids. Alex is okay, he’s in the city. Best friend’s okay, he’s in Philly.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Yes, apparently it was felt here in NE Ohio, as well. I’m getting mixed responses from friends and family. I didn’t notice it, personally.

linguaphile's avatar

Woooow. :-0…. the Eastern seaboard???? Isn’t that quite a ways from Califunny?

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

I felt the whole building shaking. I’m on the third floor so I’m screwed.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe glad you’re okay.

Would like to hear from Auggie, and other jellies near the epicentre.

linguaphile's avatar

The epicenter is in Mineral, VA, about 100 miles south of DC. Auggie’s north, so she should be okay…

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@ANef_is_Enuf Yeah, I’d like to hear from those closer to the epicenter. 6.0 is pretty rugged.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@linguaphile we’re all north…. wouldn’t that include Auggie?

Michael_Huntington's avatar

On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate that as a 4

linguaphile's avatar

@ANef_is_Enuf I’m sorry I don’t understand… I’m sure some people are south of the epicenter too; I’m curious if the people in NC felt it too

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@linguaphile I mean, all of the reports are coming from the north (NY, Michigan, Ohio, PA, NJ). I’m north, @Adirondackwannabe is north… Auggie is north, but closer to the epicentre than those of us talking here, now.
I have friends in NC that say they felt it.

Guess who is playing golf at Martha’s Vineyard? ~
Tsk tsk tsk, again he let the country without his leadership…

Chyna is in West Virginia. Would love to hear from her.

It’s only around a 5.9 earthquake. It was felt remarkably long ways away. From New Hampshire to Toronto to Ohio and Boston, NYC, Philly, etc. I don’t know how far South it was felt—certainly the Carolinas.

I was sitting on a bench outside, eating my pizza when I started feeling a little woozy. I was wondering if it was a side effect from my meds—I often feel that way when I suddenly bend over. It feels like the earth is shaking under my feel. Turns out it was!

It felt like a small oscillation—maybe in a figure 8. I thought it was in my head, but then I heard the folks at the table next to me talking about it, so I realized it was real and told them it was an earthquake.

In the East, earthquakes are very rare, so even with such a small tremblor, people pile out of the buildings. It sounds like it felt stronger in NYC than in Philly. I guess the waves travel at different amplitudes in different places.

From what the Times says, there were no injuries and no damage reported, so far, near the epicenter. It was a little excitement, which will be made into a huge fuss, but our friends in California will be snickering at us.

linguaphile's avatar

I am really, really worried about my university in DC… :( The students, staff and faculty are all still on the football field waiting for reports that buildings are safe. So far two buildings are damaged.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

It was a fairly shallow quake so that’s why it was felt over a large area.

Haleth's avatar

That was… really weird. I was making some lunch and heard this loud rumbling, then the floor and the walls started moving and there were waves in my coffee cup. I’ve been watching the news and have gotten in touch with family and friends- there doesn’t seem to be any injuries or much damage.

There was a much smaller earthquake centered around DC a few months ago. I think that one was a 3-something and only people right near the DC area felt it. It felt like a big truck rumbling past.

Blackberry's avatar

And of course the news networks are blowing this way out of proportion…..Breaking news…..footage of a (gasp).....chandelier shaking!

marinelife's avatar

@linguaphile They will be fine. There is no major damage here. No major structural damage to any buildings.

mangeons's avatar

I felt it here in MD while I was sitting at the computer (I didn’t even realize what it was at first, but I was scared, I thought maybe it was a tornado or something) and my dad’s building got evacuated (along with many others), but it seems like it’s nothing too bad.

@ANef_is_Enuf Auggie’s fine, she slept right through it of course! :-)

augustlan's avatar

Yep, we’re all ok. Shook the house pretty bad, according to my husband.

Chyna is much farther west than I am. She should be ok.

tedibear's avatar

I’m in NE Ohio and felt nothing. We had two customers who said that they felt a little rumble. Was chatting online with a friend in Ft. Edward, NY and she felt it.

I just saw the most hilarious picture. It was a photo of a plastic picnic table in a sunny park with 4 chairs around it and one was tipped over. The caption said, “2011 Virginia Earthquake: We will rebuild.”
