What is the appropriate response when you get a spam PM?

Asked by Imadethisupwithnoforethought (14682points) November 14th, 2011

What action steps should you take? Just PM Auggie with the user name?

Is that the most efficient way to do it? What would the moderation folk prefer?

Hit the Contact us button and tell someone.

I just sent the name to auggie. Probably the same spammer.

I just got one, I simply delete it unless it is repetitious, then I alert the mods, besides, I always know someone else will be on it. ;-)

It’s best to use the contact button at the top of the screen because that goes to all of the mods and admins (at least that’s my understanding of it so far). That way, anyone that is available can take care of it. If you send the message strictly to Auggie, she would be the only one aware of it (unless one of the mods also gets the spam PM) and it would take longer for us to get rid of it.

@Coloma Some years ago, in my home town, somebody fell into a canal, in the busy city center.
Everybody thought that surely someone else would jump in and rescue the woman: she drowned.
I too, sometimes think that there is no need to alarm the mods, but then again, if every Jelly thinks the same, the spammer can spam until eternity.
This is, of course, a friendly suggestion :-)

@rebbel

That is true, but, it is also true that there are many that jump on the spam wagon immediately. per this example
It’s just a personal preference, if I am spammed, I simply delete it, problem solved. :-)

In this specific case, I am afraid, the person would’ve drowned too, if it was for me ;-)

Use the contact button, and possibly send a PM to a mod who you know is currently active. In this case, however, the spammer thought it was a good idea to send me one of his messages. Gone in 60 seconds.

Silly, silly spammer.

Coloma's avatar

@rebbel Glad that didn’t happen, but, kinda an apples/oranges debate. Spam is not a life threatening matter. LOL ;-)

Click on the Fuck off spam button that is located between the chat and blog buttons.

Yes, I got that one.

@geeky_mama exactly the same message, I believe.

I think the mods deleted it within about five minutes.

If going Viking style on its ass is not possible, report that beautiful bastard to Fluther staff.

[Mod Says] Please do not repost spam. It gets deleted for a reason. Thanks!

@Seaofclouds @SavoirFaire Actually, the “contact” button emails only go to me and the founders. This is why I really wish there was a “contact a mod” button on the site that would send an email to all the mods. Hopefully someday!

In the meantime, sending me a PM (or email) is good, but if you happen to know a different mod is online at the time, contacting them directly would be quicker.

Thanks to everyone who alerted us, no matter how you went about it!

Seeing a response moderated for spam on this question makes me lose hope :(

blueiiznh's avatar

I find the spammers IP address and email address and turn the tables.

Wow..on re-reading this thread I see for the first time ever a posting of mine has been moderated. (The message I posted that contained the spammer’s note has been removed above in this thread.)

Pardon my newbie excitement at being modded for the first time ever! (And for SPAM no less!)

I got one last week. I did write to contact and Lisa Knoll answered.
LOL they are everyone on the Internet,
Delete them and tell the Moderators.
It is worse when they call me and I enjoy hanging up on them.

augustlan's avatar

@philosopher I’m Lisa Noll, no “k”, though. :)

@augustlan
I came back to reread this. Now that I have time.
Thank you.
I dislike these scammers. They disrupt our fun.
Happy Thanks Giving.
