Any tips on combating the pregnant headache?

Asked by tan235 (877points) November 22nd, 2011

I’m 22 weeks with horrible headaches. If I massage my shoulders it disappears but then comes back again as soon as I stop so I’m assuming it’s tension, I have a blood pressure monitor at home and my blood pressure is good 111/67 and that’s whilst I have this terrible headache so it can’t be anything to scary.
I just need to do something to get rid of this headache, any ideas?
I don’t want to take pain killer medication… any thoughts would be great – thanks so much.

They might be hormone related. Were you prone to headaches pre-preganacy?

I’d check with your doctor, maybe a sign of high blood pressure also.

Make an appointment kiddo. ;-)

There must be calming teas you could drink- chamomile comes to mind. Do a range of motion set of exercise for your neck and shoulders. Check google for yoga for pregnant women. Lay down flat on your couch-no pillow for 20 minutes and concentrate on relaxing from toes up. do breathing exercises to relax you and get extra oxygen to the baby.

Thanks Faye… these headaches are really annoying…. i wake up with them and they stay the whole day….
my partner just lost his job so kinda stressful right now… trying to let it wash over me as much as possible and not carry it but maybe i am.

@tan235 Good, then it must be tension related.

Yes, try to relax and not stress, take walks, long warm baths, listen to soothing music….try to stay in zen mode, the fetus is very sensitive to it’s mothers emotions on a cellular level.

Well, hopefully your diet doesn’t contain oily foods. Back of the neck pain indicates high blood pressure. Drink more water, watch your salt intake. Fruits and vegetables. I can’t stress that enough. Your state of well being begins with your diet and sleep. Get plenty of good fruits and vegetables and plenty of sleep. Go to the mall and get a Chinese SoRelax massage and then begin your new diet regime. No pork, seashell foods, things with high cholesterol. Just don’t even think about it, simple. Also bananas are a key fruit as it is rich in potassium, proven to slowly release sugars in the blood stream maintaining extremely healthy blood pressures. My girlfriend had the headaches in the beginning, of her pregnancy, unlike you. It’s important to get a back of the head massage too. Also have your spouse massage in between your eyes above the nose. Plenty of water. Plenty of deep breaths through out the day. Remind yourself, put it in your phone alarm. Inhale deep breathes every two hours. Headaches can occur from lack of oxygen. Lack of oxygen can occur with high blood pressure. The fury goes on and on. Good luck hope you found this info useful.

(31 week pregnant lady here…) I realized that my headaches were due to sleeping on two pillows at night (my intention was to prop myself up to minimize the acid reflux/heartburn at night). Perhaps you could consider your sleeping/sitting/standing posture. A chiropractor or massage therapist might help as well. Also, I take a bath most nights because I am uncomfortable from head to toe. I read that the water pressure (in a deeper bath) can help with aches and pains. Maybe standing or sitting in the shower with the warm water aimed at your head/neck (wherever the tension/headache are) would help you relax.

You can work on your diet and rest, but the doctor knows best.
