What are the reasons for Low Blood Pressure?

Asked by tan253 (2948points) July 6th, 2012

So as you know I’ve had real issues with my blood pressure – whilst pregnant it was high and now it’s really low!
It’s 90/50 – I went to the Dr today and she just told me to eat more salt – seems a tad dismissive to me. Can’t low blood pressure be very bad for you – she didn’t want to do any tests and she told me I didn’t need to go back in to get it tested either, to just eat more salt.
I feel really dizzy and am exhausted – should i be getting specific tests done?
She didn’t really tell me the causes of it either, she just said it’s quite common post partum – 3 months! Any ideas, should i be investigating this further or just eating salt and not worrying?

Dehydration can cause low blood pressure. Are you drinking plenty of fluids? Also, post partum, your overall fluid volume decreases from the increase you had while pregnant. This can take some time for your body to adjust to. As for needing specific tests, if it continues to be a problem, you can request blood work to see if there is more going on. Right now your body is trying to get readjusted to no longer being pregnant and replenishing the things you lost while pregnant (such as vitamins and minerals).

She’s your doctor, and it’s her job to provide you with both health care and the knowledge necessary to make informed decisions. Make an appointment with her to sit down and discuss/address your concerns.

I’m drinking probably 16 cups of water a day – I’m really thirsty so drinking heaps – probably not eating enough and I did cut out salt as my BP was high whilst pregnant! goodness – maybe I’ll wait and see if it gets higher, I did have a monitor at home but I threw it out but it was generally that low to 115/75… @syz i just got back from the Dr this minute!

Eating more salt, as your doctor suggested, will help your body keep the water you are drinking in you (and help raise your blood pressure) rather than just having it all come right back out. You also need to be sure you are eating enough, especially if you are breastfeeding.

yeah… so by the sounds of it it’s normal?
I always have pretty low blood pressure… 100/60 so It’s not that much of a drop but just scares me as I’m symptomatic and a hypochondriac and read that it could mean pulmonary embolism!

So you normally have low blood pressure and now you are not taking in salt because of the high blood pressure while pregnant? Sounds like the salt is the issue and that’s probably why your doctor wants to start with that. Many women have a rise in there blood pressure while pregnant that goes away once they have their baby.

As for your concern about pulmonary embolism, there are many other symptoms you would be experiencing if that were the case in addition to low blood pressure. Is there a particular reason you don’t seem to trust your doctor?

I guess mainly because of health anxiety @Seaofclouds I always expect the worst… I know it’s debilitating – i really should have HB with all the stress i put myself under.

Low sodium intake is major factor.

Above I read that someone blamed dehydration.

Actually the intake of too much water can cause what’s known as water poisoning (Excess water flushes out too much of the water retaining sodium. People have passed out and died from this condition.

Once a morning radio show offered a significant prize to whatever listener could pound the most water. So much sodium was washed out of her brain that bioelectric functioning of her organs ceased.

It stopped her heart and she died. The contest creators were held accountable.

Earning your FCC license doesn’t make you a doctor.

For one’s health a balance must be kept.

There’s nothing wrong with “low” blood pressure so long as it doesn’t produce undesirable symptoms such as fainting, light-headedness, shortness of breath, or palpitations, or isn’t associated with dehydration. Absent these I wouldn’t worry about it.

cripes @Crashsequence2012 one way to worry a worrier! That’s horrible, I did wonder if I“m drinking to much water.
@gasman I do have dizziness but I’m also exhausted so I have no idea if it’s due to low BP or just tired, BF exclusively and up 4 times a night – so pretty drained. I’m just going to ‘pound’ the salt, drink coffee and get over myself for a week and see if that helps – no real full on dizzy spells yet just an over all feeling of weirdness. ;)

@tan253

You needn’t worry. You would have to drink water to the point that is far beyond comfortable.
