Those of you who suffer from intestinal woes and digestion problems, do they ever trigger anxiety attacks?

Asked by ZEPHYRA (21750points) May 19th, 2013

Especially if accompanied by nausea, cramps etc, do they ever lead to panic attacks? How do you handle them?

I’ve never had an acute “attack” but I deal with anxiety on a daily basis, yeah.

What do you think is triggering yours? Pain, fear of something embarrassing happening in public, worries about the future? (Assuming this question is about you).

Worries about the future, regrets about the past, current problems and existence issues!!!!!!

That’s hard. I take an anti-anxiety medication and that has helped me. Talk therapy too.

Any kind of illness can trigger an anxiety attack in me, or even a panic attack. I do have medication for anxiety so I use that. But also, I find making myself comfortable, with some sort of normality around me helps. Like putting the TV on or even sea sounds or nature sounds. A cuddle also does help me. The anxiety does pass. It seems to work in cycles though.

When my thyroid was running super hyper, it was like being in a constant panic attack, sometimes. But now, it’s all under control. The only thing that throws me into a panic now is if I need a toilet fast and don’t know where one is. Thank goodness that isn’t very often.

Are you sure it’s a panic attack and not an allergic reaction? I’ve had some nasty allergic reactions and they some what mimic panic attacks, except they take a long time to occur, like over two hours. Panic attacks happen fast. But the symptoms are very similar.

@cazzie were you on any medication to get the thyroid issue under control?

@Adirondackwannabe what is your allergic reation triggered by? Never thought about that!

@ZEPHYRA Yes, I took carbimazole and then went into remission for years, then it came back and I went back on the meds and got it under control again… and then had a few more flare ups over the years, but I am currently in remission again, in fact, the last test came back a bit low and I haven’t been on any medication since last summer.

@ZEPHYRA I think one was carpet glue or something involved with changing the carpet in the office next to mine. I could feel it coming over time. The other I don’t know.

Strange what can set things off!

@ZEPHYRA I’ve been on a corticosteroid spray sense then and not a single problem.

Yes! Although it only happened to me once.
It was the first time I ever experienced irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
I didn’t know what was happening to me, and the pain was so intense.
I lay on my bed in the foetal postition, moaned, and breathed deeply.
Nothing more I could do really! Ha

Anxiety attacks are triggered by your conscious and unconscious thoughts, not by intestinal woes and digestion problems.
