What could this feeling be?

Asked by Headhurts (4505points) September 6th, 2013

I have travel sickness feeling, and I haven’t been in a car. I’m very dizzy the minute I stand up. I feel a little shaky as well, but not much.

i guess it could be that I’m dieting and my body could be missing carbs, although I don’t miss them myself, I don’t know.

Could you be pregnant? Dehydrated? Maybe you just need to eat something.
Most likely it’s exactly what you said.
Carbs are ok in moderation.

WebMD has a diagnostic tool that might help. My own experience with those symptoms was when I was dehydrated, but as @Katniss points out, that’s hardly the only possibility.
Safe bet: drink three glasses of water and make a sandwich. Low-carb diets haven’t ever given me the shakes, but I’m not everybody.

My guesses—dehydrated, mild hypoglycemic reaction (eat a candy bar, cracker or piece of fruit) or ear infection.

My guess is that it has to do with food. I know you’re limiting carbs, but are you eating enough calories? It doesn’t seem like it if you’re dizzy and feeling sick. Dehydration would be my second guess.

Headhurts's avatar

I’m not eating the recommended amount of calories. I wouldn’t say its dehydration, because I am drinking loads. I will see how I feel after I’ve had tea.

livelaughlove21's avatar

@Headhurts Tea isn’t going to make you feel better if you’re not eating enough calories. You need food. Starving yourself is not a good way to lose weight.

Headhurts's avatar

@livelaughlove21 Sorry, tea is what us Brits call food. Breakfast, dinner and tea.

@livelaughlove21 You weren’t to know.

I’ve just eaten and felt ill the whole way through, especially eating the meat. The thought of eating it was horrible.

Pregnant?

Headhurts's avatar

@Katniss Thats what I was dreading. I take contraception though.

Yeah could be pregnancy of course. Also could be dehydration, low blood sugar, blood pressure drop/spike, iron deficiency, or many other things. If it persists, hit up the local clinic.

Go see a doctor.

SpatzieLover's avatar

Hypoglycemia does this to me. If this has just begun due to dieting, you may want to look into staggering your snacks or meals every 2hrs.

@Headhurts I hope that’s not what it is then. :0(
You could go buy a pregnancy test to rule that out. Maybe that will alleviate some stress.

She starts a new diet, admits she’s not eating the recommended amount of calories, and has symptoms of low blood sugar. Why would we consider pregnancy (when she’s on birth control) before we consider that she’s simply not eating enough?

I was once on what I would now call a starvation diet (then, I would’ve argued it was completely fine and healthy) and limited my carbs to basically nothing. A few days in, I felt like shit. I was dizzy, nauseous, and lightheaded. I even passed out at one point. When I finally ate, it just made me feel worse. It took a few hours for the feeling to go away. Once I started eating more over the next couple of days, the sick feeling went away completely.

I’m not saying pregnancy is impossible here, but if there hasn’t been a missed period, there’s no need to rush out and buy a pregnancy test just yet. And there’s no reason to suspect some serious medical issue yet either.

Give it a day or two and stop starving yourself. Chances are you’ll be fine. Do yourself a favor and educate yourself on healthy eating. I eat over 1500 calories per day and I am steadily losing weight. Calculate your TDEE, subtract 25%, and eat at least that much a day. Losing weight slow and steady by changing your eating habits is a much better idea than drastically cutting calories in an attempt to drop weight quickly. You’re more likely to keep it off if you learn healthy eating habits now. Crash diets are for shit and they’re usually very unhealthy.

Low blood sugar if you’re dieting? Maybe low blood pressure?

livelaughlove21's avatar

@Judi Yes, eating too little can cause a drop in blood sugar. Blood pressure can also be an issue. Mine was sugar and, no, I’m not a diabetic.

@livelaughlove21 I got pregnant when I was on the Pill. I had the same symptoms that @Headhurts has.
It was just a thought.

livelaughlove21's avatar

@Katniss I know. I’m just saying if she’s using birth control the correct way (not skipping pills, for instance), she has an low chance if being pregnant.

Well, I eat loads today. It is a carb day, so will see how I feel later. If no better by the Monday, I will buy a pregnancy test.
