Where can I hold a bake sale?

Asked by Kairi (794points) December 28th, 2013

A friend of mine is trying to save up for a Missions trip and wants to do a bake sale somewhere to try and raise money for it. I’ve read online several different places, but most of those places would require a payment to use the space. Any idea where we (I’m helping her out with it) can hold a bake sale that won’t cost more then the bake sale could make?

If you are a non-profit organization, you can try outside Sam’s Clubs, but other wise, no business wants an unlicensed, uninsured person on their property.

You might try a church.

@YARNLADY I warned her against the same thing. she could probably try her own church, if possible, actually. she was going to but wasn’t sure they’d allow it.

There aee probably local laws against this. The Health Department would want to inspect cooking facilities, etc.

@jca that’s what I was concerned with. but they do bake sales at schools and fundraisers and stuff like that all the time

I’m sure there’s a difference between a class doing it at the school or a girl scout troop outside a store vs. an individual trying to profit.

@jca true. it’s a religious thing, though, for a Missions trip, so it may be different. but considering that, her church is probably the way to go

Just go to the flea market and set up! That’s what I do. You may get a small fee for the day but if there’s lots of people than you’ll make a killing!

@DWW25921 I’ll keep that in mind for when it warms up and the markets come back around here. thanks!

@DWW25921 Our so-called flea market requires all sellers to have a re-sale I D number for the IRS.

The best way to get money for a church mission is to let the church members know you are willing to work, and they will come up with house cleaning, yard work, child care and various other things.

@YARNLADY that also sounds like a good idea to me. thanks

@YARNLADY That’s a good point. I find that it’s good to have a local “catch all” business license for situations like this. Especially if you think you may be in this situation every now and again. Just go to the courthouse and be vague and all inclusive. It has come in handy from time to time. Mine was $30.

@DWW25921 @YARNLADY sounds like something she (and I) could both use! I’ll bring it up to her ^^
