How to make a new good habit and nuke a bad one?

Asked by Khajuria9 (2141points) November 1st, 2014

Its been years since I am trying to get rid of some of my bad habits but the things are not working out. I don’t know why but somehow, procrastination crawls in and just leads me nowhere, I mean, all my thoughts , all plans, all future-schedules everything just sweeps away.
I really need to be out of this now. Please, somebody help me with an efficient way of breaking a habit and forming a new one that is rewarding.
Also, if you would like to share your personal experiences about the habits that you cut yourself free from, you are very welcome. Thanks in advance!

Make the smallest, least painful change in the right direction. Repeat. When that becomes second nature, make the smallest, least painful change in the right direction. You will start slow, but the momentum will multiply before too long.

I find that making a list of the things I have to do and then crossing them off as I do them very satisfying. It helps with procrastination and it also helps reduce ruminating in a fruitless way about all the things you have to do.

I have tried this list making thing but it doesn’t work at all, I am so stiff and stubborn. How do I cure this?

Maybe you can analyze your anxiety. Think of what is making you the most anxious and try to focus on dealing with that one thing.

I feel your pain, and I’m so sorry. I’ve been dealing with family crap. I have to quit smoking!!! And need to get off sugar….... This seems insurmountable. I love checking things off a list.

@Khajuria9 The hardest part is to look at yourself and acknowledge your weaknesses. It’s not easy or not always fun. I know I’m as stubborn as a mule and I hate to be wrong. But I can admit when I am. So I have learned to eat crow and try to fix my bad habits. I still pick up other bad habits and have to work on them, but once you can accept you aren’t always right, it get’s easier to change.

I would suggest go slow don’t try to change all things at once, initially try to make small changes in you which are also easy for you once you get succeed in this small changes you will get the confidence of bringing big changes in you. All d best.
