Why are the psalms included in the bible?

Asked by talljasperman (21916points) November 5th, 2014

I listened to the first 63 on YouTube and it just sounds like David whining to God about his people to the chief musician. Also who was the chief musician at the time?

So psalm readers can claim to tell your fortune.

I don’t know.

I think I can shed some light on that, but the thread would just turn ugly.

The Psalms are the oldest part of the bible. They are literally the songs of the Israelite people written down once they learned how to write. They are the oldest stories and the times they describe in some cases refer to periods before Genesis.

You will find Yahweh fighting against Tia-mat and Leviathan, monsters of chaos, to create order if you listen to them. I do not understand why you think they should not be included.

The Psalms are song as prayer. In that, some might say they are the most appropriate items in the Old Testament.

David was said to be “a man after God’s own heart”, and the Psalms are how he interacted with God. They provide an example of how a relationship with God can be, and show the cares of a leader.

I’m curious, what do you think the criteria should be for inclusion/exclusion of writings from the Bible?

@FireMadeFlesh Mathew, Mark , Luke, and John. Are all I had access to in school. I was never introduced to the rest. I had to find out on my own. I don’t like poetry.

@talljasperman Fair enough. Did you go to a Christian school then?
