This is a sure sign of senility, right?

Asked by Aster (20023points) March 21st, 2015

My BFF’s husband, 82, is quite wealthy. I mean really wealthy. He has been living in her childhood home for many decades but they have two other homes. At their ages (she’s 70) they have no business climbing the stairs to get to the bathroom so she wanted a half bath installed downstairs at great cost. He refused. This was three years ago. In the past week he has “used the facilities” twice. What facilities? The toilet he placed directly on the dining room floor with no plumbing under or behind it. He did this to save money but she never told me about it until today. He uses it then walks off , leaving it for her to clean. Has he lost his mind? I fear the worst; that he will pass away soon. He and I are not friends. They have no children to help her out with him because he never wanted any.

Probably senility but an even surer sign that something is askew in the dynamics of that marriage.

Is it the first time you heard something strange about their daily life together?

Not necessarily. It may just mean that he’s frugal with money to the point of being an ass about it.

As an aside, I wouldn’t say that age has anything to do with whether they have any business climbing the stairs. My grandfather was 87 and would still ride his bicycle out to the highway diner (7 miles, one way, from his house) if the mood took him.

Well, pooping in the dining room on a toilet that isn’t hooked up to anything sure doesn’t sound sane.

That is the funniest thing I’ve heard in a while! Of course there’s probably nothing funny about it from the poor woman’s viewpoint. What would happen if she refused to clean it? Come to think of it, why not just close the doors to the “throne” room and ignore the entire thing? After all, she is not using the disgusting thing. See how long he can stand the consequences.

I’m shitting in a toilet sitting in the living room with no plumbing and you have to question my capacity? I think the answer is pretty obvious.

Actually, the old man is probably risking his autonomy by carrying on with such nonsense. The entire show would amount to fairly damaging evidence in a competency hearing. Why not threaten him with a call to the Department of Health?

ULTRA control freak!!! (Don’t you be tellin’ ME what to do, woman!!!)

Turns out it’s a porta potty the ill use. Has a stainless steel base and handles and white “pot” and lid. There is no way to conceal it. It sits in the corner of the dining room and you MUST walk through the dining room to get to the kitchen. They have a black tarp over it. She sent me pics.

Well, if it is actually a device made for that purpose, then it’s not necessarily a sign of senility, but it is pretty ass-holish. This isn’t about money, it’s about control. I’m assuming that she doesn’t have access to the money herself, or she would arrange for the construction of the half-bath herself.

janbb's avatar

Can he not clean it out himself? Why must she do it?

dappled_leaves's avatar

Yes, can’t she just hire a plumber and have a toilet installed? Surely, she’s not helpless and can use a credit card.

^^ Which was my initial point about the dysfunctionality of the marriage.

@janbb Indeed. There doesn’t seem to be a functional way forward, so…
