C drive full and I'm not sure what files to safely delete.

Asked by jnkpauley (226points) June 28th, 2015

My C drive is showing up as FULL. I had this issue about 6 months or so ago and took the computer to my local computer store. One of the techs downloaded WinDirStat which unearthed a weird log file that was voraciously gobbling up all the space in the C drive. (Sorry, I don’t know the name of the log file.) The tech was able to remove these nasty files and everything was great! Unfortunately, WinDirStat got deleted from my computer somewhere between then and now (my bad) and NOW I can’t download it again because the C drive is full! Can someone help me figure out what files I can safely remove to resolve this issue (from the comfort of my office rather than at the computer store?) I can share a list or take a screen shot of the gigantic files if that helps. Thanks in advance!

Download CCcleaner and start with that.

I have successfully deleted some files I knew were okay to delete which gave me enough space to download CC Cleaner. THX! Hopefully this works….

You can get a 32GB USB card and put photos and documents on it.

Yeah, you could have probably even used a cheap flash drive to download a cleaner onto.

Photos, music and videos are usually the biggest expendable files

Games are usually the biggest programs.

It appears to have been HUGE trace files from my Kaspersky Anti Virus software. I deleted the files and it has worked! Thanks for all you input!!

Why not try Google search? You’ll find lots of helpful sites like this one with step-by-step instructions.

Anti-virus software can often have worse effects on system performance than actual viruses.

Web browsers often can get set to store a lot of nonsense too. If you can still run your browser, you could go tell it to delete its temporary files, history, cookies and/or cache.

And you can look in C:\temp for files that should all be delete-able.

As well as emptying Trash.

Good job! Those problems can be maddening. Especially when the problem stops you from downloading a file to fix the problem.

In Windows Explorer right click on Drive C and select Properties from the popup menu. Click on the Tools tab. You should have tools there to check for errors and optimise drive. Running these may help with disk full problems.
It may also help if you keep certain files on a separate external drive. A reasonable way to do this is to transfer your photos, mp3s etc to the external drive once a month. After that you can defragment your computer C drive and run a system cleaner like CCleaner. If you find your computer slowing down you may need to run CCleaner once a week making sure you always use the register cleaner.

Just wondering, how big is your hard drive?
