Did you know that Fluther will not let you log in if you block tracking cookies?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33171points) July 1st, 2015

Nasty nasty.

Fluther requires that Quantcast (a page-tracker that follows you around) be active in order to log in.

So Fluther is selling information about me and where I go. And if I turn off page-tracking, no Fluther login.

(The page-track defender that I use is Ghostery. I highly recommend it. It’s a Chrome extension.)

I have tracking cookies blocked with Ghostery. Quantcast and Google Analytics are blocked and Fluther still works for me.

Firefox. 38.0.5

Maybe a Chrome issue?

LuckyGuy's avatar

Could be. Actualy with only 2 trackers Fluther is one of the best around. Have you ever gone to Huff post? 11 trackers:
Advertising.com
Facebook Connect
Google Analytics
Google+ Platform
Gravity Insights
Korrelate
New Relic
Polar Mobile
Quantcast
ScoreCard Research Beacon
Twitter Button

I know – Huffington is pretty bad.

But I try and turn as many off as possible.

I use Chrome with Ghostery and have no problems logging in.

How do you turn them off?

elbanditoroso's avatar

Go to chrome / settings / extensions

Look for GHOSTERY

Let it install.

It will report each of the nasty little trackers on the lower right of the screen. On the upper right, click the little blue ghost, and turn off the ones that you don’t want.

On most pages, I turn everything off. You will be astounded (and disgusted) when you see how much you are being tracked.

So do I have to use Chrome thereafter?

If you want the benefits of tracker blocking

I usually don’t mind cookies. On the other hand, I’m not a fan of creepy, sentient baked goods.

@Dutchess_III I load Ghostery through Firefox. Tools / Add-Ons./ Get Add-ons

Dutchess_III's avatar

Coolness. Thanks.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I’m at Get Add-ons, but it is just showing me suggested add ons, and I don’t see any place where I can request Ghostery, specifically. There is a “Self Destructing Cookies” option…

LuckyGuy's avatar

In the search box Do a search for Ghostery. It will pop up. I have Ghostery 5.4.5.1 – signed.

Dutchess_III's avatar

There is no search box.

I’m at the Ghostery home page. Can I just install it from there?

LuckyGuy's avatar

Yes. That works. I’m surprised you don’t see it but who knows…

Dutchess_III's avatar

Do you see a search option, LuckyGuy?

Are you sure you are on mozillas official page? It looks a lot different for me.

The one in your image looks like a bit of a scam site trying to get you to install nasties.

Well, it was in my tool bar on Firefox so IDK.
