Is this moderately safe?

Asked by DrasticDreamer (23996points) February 12th, 2016

My wisdom tooth is starting to kill me. I have an appointment scheduled to have it removed, but it’s not until March 9th. I called today to see if there were any cancellations to see if I could have it out sooner, but there haven’t been any.

One of my FB buds told me to search YouTube for this because he said he knows people that swear by it. I know there are risks like he mentions in the video, but is it so risky that it’s a flatout stupid idea? I’m getting a bit desperate since the pain is constant now.

IMO having to self medicate your tooth ache for 26 days IMO is way too long especially with the solution offered in this video where the medicine in the capsule not only could burn your gums but the razor blade if it slips will slice open your fingers.

I can see an oral surgeon being booked for that period of time…but can you contact your regular dentist to see if they can offer you some options for mitigating the pain until you get the tooth extracted? I know Ora-Gel applied to the offending tooth combined with Ibuprofen worked well for the kiddies when tooth aches made things painful. Good luck.

Yeah, when I called earlier to see if there were any cancellations, they did ask if I wanted to schedule an appointment in the meantime to see what could be done for me regarding the pain. I declined, but only because I didn’t want to be given hardcore pain meds, but I think I probably will call back tomorrow and schedule something. I’ve been taking Advil and putting Anbesol on it, but even that combo isn’t working as well as I would have liked.

… my own damn fault for putting off the extraction for so long. Anxiety sucks.

Good question. Good luck. I don’t know for sure, but I imagine it is only somewhat unsafe, but it sounds like it can injure gums and cheek flesh, so probably not good to do for a long time. I’d talk to your dentist and surgeon or others, as it seems to me usually people in agony are treated as emergencies and given priority.

Try gargling with warm saltwater.

I think see the doctor and maybe he will squeeze you in sooner for the extraction. In the meantime maybe he can give you a topical Xylocaine type drug to numb the area a couple of hours at a time. That sort of thing shouldn’t be used while sleeping if it something that numbs your throat also from swallowing. Read the warnings.

Have you tried ibuprofen? Ibuprofen tends to be very good for pain after an extraction, it might help well now. If you weigh over 120 I’d take as much as 600mg (3 OTC Advils) make sure with plenty of water and a little food. It takes about 50 minutes to start working. You can try just two pills first if you want.

Tylenol is worth a try too I think if you can’t take ibuprofen it if it doesn’t help. No alcohol while taking Tylenol.

I suggest calling the dentist and tell him you are in pain. If he can’t squeeze you in, call another dentist.

I meant dentist or oral surgeon, not your GP. I should not have written doctor.

I would say to call your dentist’s office and say that you are having serious pain. The dentist can prescribe something. You could also run the youtube solution by them and ask if it is safe. If you do try it, be careful to use something to keep the pain reliever from getting on your skin.

Thanks, guys. The pain calmed down a lot today, thankfully. I did decide that if it starts up like that again, I’m going to ask to be seen before my extraction so they can help with the pain.

@AshlynM I did gargle with salt water twice, just in case of infection. It didn’t help much with the pain, but it was a good idea nonetheless.

@JLeslie Yeah, I’ve been taking Advil and using Anbesol. The other day, though, the combination wasn’t doing much to help.

Right now I’m just going to cross my fingers and hope the tooth cooperates with me.

There is topical much stronger than anbesol. It’s prescription. I’m not sure how ling term you can use it. Maybe if you are really uncomfortable just call and see if the doctor will prescribe something topical that works better if you don’t want to take stronger pain medication.

Also, I wouldn’t trust the gatekeepers to squeeze you in for a earlier surgery. You might want to insist on talking to the oral surgeon instead of relying on his staff. I know it’s difficult when you are the one trying to fight for yourself and you feel like cheap at the same time. I empathize.

I hope you get some relief.
