Can you provide some career change suggestions?

Asked by KhiaKarma (4331points) March 20th, 2016 from iPhone

My husband has been working in Film Production for about 8 years in Louisiana. The tax incentives have been reduced and will probably be totally cut completely very soon. Job opportunities are few now and he is on his third week of unemployment.

He is a very talented writer and even has some very good screenplays and short films he has made. He has been working for “the man” and has not been able to address his own dreams of being a filmmaker. (Really difficult to do anyways when all the $ people just want to remake hero movies)

So now he is looking for a career change. He feels like a failure and is ready to just succumb to the 9–5 blah job, but I really am hoping that this can be a time of positive change and happier times ahead. He’s thought about insurance, which fits his outgoing personality, but does not utilize his creative talents.

I would appreciate any thoughts/ideas on careers he could enter that may fit for a creative, hard-working person. I have craiglisted, googled, etc- but wanted to tap into the collective consciousness of Fluther since we are in brainstorming phase.

Thanks in advance!

My inclination is to recommend following his passion but in a different place.

Louisiana is about to go through being a horrendous place to live in the next few years. And perhaps he can consider an off shoot career, like advertising, where he can make short 30 second films, or write smaller pieces.

Best of luck to you both!

Education level? He might like working in commercial real estate if he is outgoing and creative.

He has a bachelor’s degree. We have thought about moving out of the state. We have lived here less than 10 years.

Only problem with moving is that I have my own business here and am just starting to turn a profit.

Make Web advertising videos for small businesses. 3–5 minute shorts. Every good kickstarter campaign needs one.

Heck, my company is not a kickstarter operation yet I was asked to make one for my operation. Ugh! PIA! I’ll kludge one together using my Nikon D3200 but It would be nice to have it done by someone who has a clue.

I too believe that your location is critical to your husband’s ambitions. It isn’t just pretty girls with dreams who must flock to Hollywood in order to be discovered. How about his working on the promotional aspects of your up and flourishing business?

Funny enough, that’s why we moved to “Hollywood South”....

Thanks everyone! It’s hard to even know how to begin with getting into some of these things such as advertising, etc without knowing the right people. I just want to support him through this as it is probably one of the most difficult times of his life.

With everyone and his brother mounting vlogs that, for some reason, they want to broadcast from the front seat of their car or pickup truck (and that’ll be a good sociology study, someday, as to why people choose that particular venue), and others making instructional videos for everything from computer programming and operation to how-I-built-it “Instructables” – in addition to advertising – there is a crying need for reasonably priced high quality video of professional lighting and sound management for people following a decently edited script. In other words, video producing more than content. The content is already “out there” and all around us, but so much of it is so awful.

I can’t tell you how many videos on how to use Office program features I have started and rejected watching after a minute of inappropriate or meaningless intro, out-of-focus shooting, booming voice, wandering attention and attention-grabbing (for the wrong reasons) background. I like to hear other people’s point of view on a lot of topics, so I’m willing to watch vlogs and videos posted online from people I don’t necessarily agree with, but then find myself distracted by “Why is this guy doing this from that car? What kind of car is that, anyway? Who told him it would be a good idea to wear that hat while he’s doing this? And where is he parked, I wonder?” ... and can’t even get into whatever he’s trying to say.

Maybe your husband could do two things: 1) Make a free video of “how to make a video” – seriously, as an introduction to what could be the money-maker, 2) Sell his professional production services at affordable prices to people who don’t want to do all of the things that he will advise in #1, but would pay a few bucks for quality studio, editing and sound management time.

And all of that could be the sideline to what @LuckyGuy has suggested. Quality video is becoming more and more vital to all kinds of businesses, in both promotion and in training. Anyone who can make high-quality, engaging, informative somewhat entertaining (to hold interest) and informative videos to demonstrate business processes to new employees, for example, or safety videos – and can promote those services to the people who need them, business owners and trainers around the world! – should be able to do all right.
