Is there a free phone number reverse trace that actually works?

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) May 4th, 2016

I don’t answer phone numbers I don’t know, and I like to reverse-trace them.
With diligence, I have found free number tracers that worked reasonably well, but I use them so seldom I lose track of the accurate ones between times.

I Google the phone number using the format 555–555-1212.

It seems like the best Google results are usually Whitepages.com (best for residential numbers in my experience) and 800 Notes (best for companies spamming me).

Ha!
Well 800notes says the last caller was a spammer. Thanks, @Call_Me_Jay.

I usually don’t bother for every number, unless they leave a weird or threatening message or they call repeatedly. Then I google it.

One thing I have noticed is that every number I’ve ever googled to see if other people have complained about it has been complained about as spam. Even ones that later turn out to be legitimate calls from people who are in no way spammers. I suspect people just report every damn number they don’t recognize, which kind of makes these searches pointless.

I think it’s possible for some spammers to route their calls through legitimate numbers, @dappled_leaves, at least temporarily.

@ibstubro Ok, but then there’s still no point in using a reverse lookup.

Sometimes you can put in the number in the search bar and you may find several people already reported it as a telemarker or scam and they sometimes add information about what the caller said. I’ve done this and some numbers are easily recognized as a scam when you see several people but slightly different variation of what the caller said. Many times they will add that the caller said they were from the United Kingdom, South Africa or Nigeria. If nothing shows up then it’s probably just a private number. Like I put in this number 2242065329 that always shows up on my phone as a Survey, and according to this site people say it’s telemarkters or scam about lowering your interest rates.

Oh, you could also try getting something like the CPR Call Blocker V202 1200 Number Capacity Block Telemarketer Calls, Solicitor Calls, Junk Faxes.
