Can you hear better with the light on, and other silly questions?

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) August 2nd, 2016

Question about non-rational responses to the everyday situations in our lives.

I opened the basement door to hear if the dehumidifier was still running.
At first, I couldn’t tell, definitively, if the bugger was running or not. So, I turned the light on.
I didn’t move to take a step, I just turned the light on.
Yup!
That did it.
The dehumidifier is still running.

Ask a silly question, get a silly answer.
Bonus points if you can ground the question in real life.

What you do when you turn the light on is you rule certain things out as the source of the sound, you are not actually hearing better. This happens so fast that you don’t notice and perceive that you are hearing better with the light on.

Snd maybe when there’s nothing to look at, you can concentrate on listening.

Why is the moon following me everywhere I go?

For most of my childhood I believed that the moon loved me, until when I learned that the Earth was round.

It took me a bit, @ARE_you_kidding_me, but I got that. Sensory overload, reduced, in effect.
I think @stanleybmanly echos this answer!

@Mimishu1995 has a new conundrum!

Yes, you offload some of the sensory workload from your ears to your eyes. Parallel computing.

Not a silly question but a really weird thing just happened while reading this question.

It looked like a tiny spider was on my monitor. So I tried to get it to crawl on my finger so I could move it. Damn thing crawled right under my finger and shot out the other side. It wasn’t on the screen. It was in it. There is a tiny gap between the plastic and the part that makes pixels. A spider got in that gap and was crawling around. I had no idea this was possible. Now I am terrified to sleep.

I think I hear better with no light.

I turn the radio off when I’m running low on gas. It doesn’t help with gas mileage, but I still do it.

I once had a digital alarm clock radio that had a section of the display burned out.
One day, on closer examination, I realized that a cockroach had gotten between the display and the lens and died.
Time for a new alarm clock!

That’s hilarious @chyna. Even funnier that you told it on yourself. :-)

I sometimes put my reading glasses on. They make looking further away blurry. If someone approaches me and I can’t see them clearly, I can’t hear them either. I often say ‘wait till I take my glasses off so that I can hear you’.

Also one time my husband and I were driving along, perfectly legally, when we saw a police car. ‘Police car!’ I said. ‘Shh’.
must have been the librarian training…
