Drank 2 week old coconut water, will it make me sick?

Asked by tan253 (2948points) August 13th, 2016

So Flutherist’s,
I bought some coconut water from the supermarket, it says to consume within 3 days. (I never do)

This was a week ago, then I went and bought another one this week and forgot I had some left over from last week.
Anyway I made a beetroot smoothie and used the last of the coconut water in the fridge, wasn’t until after I drank it that I realised it was the really old coconut water.
What are the chances of getting poisoned from it?
The expiry is 2017 but I’m assuming that is – before it’s opened.
Any thoughts?
Juice tasted normal.

You’re prolly gonna die. Thanks for letting us know. RIP.

Sorry, kidding. You’ll be fine. 2 weeks is not big deal. It was in the fridge.

And good on you for eating beets. My favorite nutrition book says beets are one of the best foods for you.

YEAH WELL, Look let’s be honest, I will die, someday – hopefully not from 2 week old coconut juice, it tasted fine and looked normal… so…. I should be ok – when my Nana was dying from cancer the nurse actually gave her dried beetroot to make into a drink, apparently they used it as an alternative to chemotherapy in the ‘olden’ days.

When did you drink it? Do you feel fine? If it was a while ago, I think you’re going to make it.

@tan253 Interesting. The book Eating on the Wild Side was given to me by a friend with stage 4 cancer two years ago. She also had chemo. She knew she was dying soon. But she was evangelizing for things the rest of us could do to live longer.

RIP, Jane, and thank you for the book.

Eat beets, everybody!

I drank it about an hour ago…. so I’m assuming I’d know pretty soon, given it’s liquid??

I think I’ll be ok, I just read on a site that some peole can keep an opened tetrapak for 2 weeks, so if they do that on a regular basis and are not sick, I shouldn’t get sick!

Sorry to hear about your friend @Call_Me_Jay x

If the unopened container was good until 2017, you’re good.
Food facts.

yeah that’s what I figured…. it is good till 2017 but it also says consume in 3 days… definitely didn’t do that….. x

Hey Guys, just in case anyone is thinking of me still, I think I’m fine!
It was 3 hours ago and I feel fine… haha just saying, maybe i over reacted???

I think you’ll be fine. Fruits (I know some people don’t classify it as fruit) aren’t likely to make you sick like old meat. People let fruit ferment to make alcohol, which is basically old fruit.

Don’t worry about it. Nothing you can do now anyway.

NOTHING will happen, guaranteed.

How are you doing now?

tan253's avatar

I feel fine! Just ate a lovely lamb shank for dinner, I’m assuming it’s fine, it’s been 7 hours… I’m sure I would have gotten some kind of gastric discomfort by now.

Good to know I can keep coconut water a bit longer than I thought in the fridge : )

FYI, I’ve used milk a month or more past the date on the carton, to cook.

By and large, if something is unsafe to consume, it will let you know. Through your senses. Smell, look, or taste.

tan253's avatar

Yeah it’s been 24 hours and I’m still fine, I think it’s ok to drink coconut juice 2 weeks after it’s opened if it’s in a tetrapak!

Just in case anyone else is googling the same thing I did!
Thank you everyone…. x

It’s funny that we’ve been so indoctrinated to let the food industry tell us what’s good and what’s not that we fail to rely on our own senses.

If it hasn’t killed you by now, you’ll be alright.

Didn’t make me sick ;)
