(NSFW) Should an act like this require psychological assessment?

Asked by NerdyKeith (5489points) August 29th, 2016

This to me is the most sick and sadistic thing I’ve read in the news all week. A 62 year old man has been arrested for filling a lube dispenser with a corrosive acid at a Sydney gay night club.

My question is should he not be brought in for psychological assessment as a result of this act? Clearly this is not a person of sanity or rationality at all.

As part of his criminal trial process, yes.

Two responses:

[Your first article reference cannot be reached – behind a pay wall. I was unable to read it

1) the guy is clearly rational and sane. He had the smarts to identify the container, to come up with the plan, to somehow figure out a way to fill the container with acid without getting caught, to know the corrosive effect of the acid… clearly he was a person who knew how to plan and execute a scheme that had a number of moving parts. So to say that he was irrational is simply wrong.

In fact, you could say (in business terms) that he made a business plan, he executed his business plan, and he was successful in carrying it out. So the guy is rational and definitely in control of his actions.

2) So the real question is the legality of the action – intentionally causing harm to others in this way. Is it a hate crime? Probably. Should he be prosecuted? Absolutely.

But describing this as irrational and insane is a misnomer. It actually is insulting to people who are actually irrational and insane. This was rational criminal act, pure and simple.

Yes. That is usually (at least in California) part of a probation department evaluation as part of the sentencing process after being found guilty.

@elbanditoroso I’ll have to respectfully disagree with you on that one. Even thinking about filling a dispenser with acid is not something a rational person thinks about. I cannot accept it to be a rational thought. It’s downright sadistic.

PS I have asked the mods to allow me to edit my post with an alternative first source.

@NerdyKeith – I think it depends on how a person defines ‘rational’. Does doing something sadistic automatically make you irrational? I would argue that it doesn’t.

Take any number of events:
– torturing prisoners of war for information
– punishment at a jail for breaking the rules
– capital punishment

Those are all sadistic – but are they all irrational?

I’m sure a psych evaluation will be involved if the incident is prosecuted but, I think it’s pretty damn obvious this sick, twisted fuck is a sadistic sociopath, which means, to me, he really ought to just be put in front of a firing squad. There is no rehabbing psychopathic sadists.

They have lube dispensers in gay night clubs? I assume that’s because dudes are having lots of sex with each other. It must be great to be gay…. I’m envious.

To the question, the man should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. And hopefully he gets a cell with a large horny gay rapist, who has NO lube available….Hopefully they try him as a hate crime offender. To add more time.

The world is full of terrible people @NerdyKeith. I’d rather not waste our tax dollars assessing this losers cranium.

@elbanditoroso

I suppose it’s more regarded as irrational when one is throwing vindictiveness into the mix (which include this story). Although I do view capital punishment as an irrational tactic. I’m very opposed to the death penalty. But that’s a different topic.

Coloma's avatar

@NerdyKeith I used to be opposed to the death penalty too, and while I was being partially in jest, I am kinda on the fence again the last few years when it comes to the worst of the worst.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^The government kills us in SO many ways. Why not the death penalty?

To each their own with their private free time….but I have been in a LOT of clubs and have yet to see lube dispensers in the club. What’s that all about? To me sex in public places with or without lube would violate all sorts of ordinances….I am going to google Hedonism and get back to you…

Espiritus_Corvus's avatar

Yep. It will be part of his criminal proceedings, but the psych thing will be more punishment than therapy. Sad, because a guy like this needs to be separated from other people for as long as it takes for him to fix his problem—and that probably won’t happen because the kind of therapy he will be forced into will not fix his problem. It will just piss him off even more and he will be released to do it again.

Lock him up. If he’s lucky he gets time with a counselor, but I really don’t care. I guess that’s awful. A counselor would mean he either will get help, or maybe get a lesser type of sentence for what he did? I don’t care how much someone doesn’t approve of something, how can anyone cause harm like that? Except to say that I’m ok with this guy being punished in more ways than one, which I guess is me being ok with him being caused some harm.

Really some sick people out there.

Well you could simply make him use the lube and let him beg to be killed, and then chop his head in half with a giant axe. Hmm, I seem to have forgotten I’m usually against torture and the death penalty. Oh yeah, I just watched a bunch of Game of Thrones. Valar Morghulis.

Sneki95's avatar

I don’t think any psychiatrist would help him. Putting him in jail, with all those men, without any lube, however….wouldn’t help him either, but he would deserve it.

The law addresses this type of issue, but in my opinion, it falls short. Any murder, or act of aggression at the level addressed above is insane.

msh's avatar

Gee, I don’t know. But I hope the punishment includes a bucket of honey, a brush, some rope and some form of fire ants. Ooo- and no sunscreen. The sick bastard.

Espiritus_Corvus's avatar

^^Ha. Yeah. Give him a case of poison ivy, too. And scabies. Hold back the treatment while he’s in jail. Scabies will totally mess him up. He won’t sleep and scratch himself raw with no relief.

For those wondering this particular club, is a sex club. Otherwise known as a bathhouse. As a gay man, they are not my cup of tea. But each to their own. And it still does not condone putting acid in the lumbricant dispensers. It should be seen as no different to putting acid in a soap dispenser.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^Perhaps the lube dispensers should be locked in some way. Apparently if you need lube, you should carry some small disposable packets instead of a communal lube dispenser.

Come To Think Of it, The term ‘Communal Lube Dispenser’ sounds pretty nasty…. I don’t think I’d use it even if there wasn’t potentially acid in it. Yuck.

Again. Bath houses? Must be great to be gay…

elbanditoroso's avatar

The commoners use Common Lube Dispensers.

The royal family uses Royal Lube Dispensers…

MrGrimm888's avatar

^Do they have bacon flavored lube in the Royal lube dispensers? ~

Coloma's avatar

^^^ That is disgusting, only a guy would think of that. haha

I once used Astroglide to rescue a lizard that was stuck in a drain hole in a stack of clay flower pots on my deck. Worked like a charm. Lubin’ lizards, 101 uses for personal lubricant around the house. lol

Brian1946's avatar

“Lube your lizard” has a nice ring to it. ;-)

Coloma's avatar

@Brian1946 haha, it does doesn’t it. :-)

NerdyKeith's avatar

@MrGrimm888 As it happens they have alarm censors on them and this is how they caught the guy who tried to put the acid in them.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^Ah. So it was a problem before, or a preconceived potential problem.

NerdyKeith's avatar

@MrGrimm888 They’ve had problems before. A few of the articles I’ve read on this story have reported such.
