Putting aside your preference of candidate, are people more concerned about Clinton's emails than Trump's upcoming rape trial?

Asked by OpryLeigh (25305points) October 30th, 2016 from iPhone

Here in the U.K. I am hearing loads about Hillary’s email scandal and how this is one of the reasons why people “just don’t trust her” but very little about the fact that Trump has been accused of raping a minor. Is this the same in the States?

I don’t want this to turn into an arguement about who’s more qualified or trustworthy but I would like to understand why the accusations that Trump has commited assault and rape seem to be less of an issue for people. Maybe it’s because there is no proof as of yet and it’s just “he said/she said”?

I think “your preference of candidate” is what determines which you are concerned more about. I am more and more convinced that there is no objective news reporting in the country and people listen to their own echo chamber.

Well to be fair, as of today, Mr. Trump, like Hillary remains unindicted.

US citizen here. There seems to be more news and posts on Facebook by “friends” that pertain to Clinton’s e-mail situation.

With that said, the handful of friends who are Republican supporters have yet to post anything positive regarding Trump ever, even if asked to do so privately. The only one who has offered a positive perspective of any of Trump’s political promises is my brother, and he plans to vote for Clinton.

@AnonymousAccount8 It is scary that he admits to such behaviour but people still defend him. If he wasn’t running for the presidency and all of this came out about him I wonder if people would be more concerned about it. I also wonder if people are making excuses for his behaviour simply because they don’t like Hillary?!

Rampant, culturally and societally entrenched misogyny is not the entire reason, but it is a big part of the reason.

Trump’s rape trial is not mentioned in the news. Few people in the US know it exists.

Amazing how if you have enough money you can keep most anything hushed up.

Think about Trump scandals as different songs. While they are all playing at once, and have more songs joining in, it just becomes a cacophony of noise.

Hillary’s email scandal just gets louder by virtue of additional pieces joining, but it’s still the same song.

There are people who will vote against the indecipherable noise about Trump, and the loud and clear but awful song about Hillary’s email.

It’s a choice between the sound of a jackhammer and musak.

It comes down to news values and/or perhaps fear of litigation. Accusations of rape and so on are very sensational, but what actual evidence is there? Perhaps the media is running scared of legal challenges. Fear of litigation most definitely has a chilling factor in terms of what’s reported. I don’t know if this is the case, just a thought as to why they might not be giving these accusations the coverage we might expect.

I’ve seen about one story here about Trump’s interaction with Putin. Again, I’d have thought this would have received much more coverage, but not so. If the evidence is flimsy or all they have is speculation, they might be reluctant to cover such ideas too deeply. Is Trump litigious? I don’t know his history of challenging the media legally.

I had not heard that Trump was accused of rape. I have heard the many accusations that he groped women, but nothing about rape. Can someone clue me in?

As to international news, there is very little here about Trump or Hillary anymore. It’s Mosul, Mosul, Mosul, Kill ISIS, and more Mosul, 24/7.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

It may also be that they don’t want to interfere with court processes in the US. Have US publications covered this situation at all?

They are probably waiting until the afternoon before the election to plaster it all over every TV screen in America. There is a concerted effort to keep this idiot from the presidency and I’m all for it. I and many, many others consider this a national emergency.

I asked a similar question on another site and one person actually said that they were more concerned about Hillary’s emails because that shows us how she conducts herself professionally in her political position and Trump’s rape trial only shows us how he conducts himself personally. It seems there are people that actually think that rape and sexual assault can be excused as a mere inappropriate hobby.

People from each side of the aisle will make excuses for their side no matter what it is.
Clinton using a public server for Government emails seems more wrong to the Rep/cons that Trumps rape allegations .
I personally don’t get the freaking out cry over the damn server, like Government servers aren’t hacked as well?
Trumps blatant regard towards women I hope comes back and bites his ass hard on election day, that every woman gets out and votes against him big time.

I was not aware of the story about Trump. That he has come so far gives me the willies.
