A friend's FB account was clearly hacked - what to do?

Asked by janbb (62876points) January 31st, 2017

I got a friend request from someone I was already friends with. By mistake, I friended her again. Today I got a message from “her” using my middle name which I never use. I responded and corrected it and then got an obvious scam message. I didn’t respond and unfriended her. Is there a way to get the message to the real her somehow? I don’t have any other way to contact her.

You can use Facebook Messenger on her original FB listing.

The account was not “hacked” – a common misperception – it was “cloned”. That is, someone took some of the public and easily copied items from the profile: the cover photo, perhaps, the person’s photo and name and some other details, and made a fake profile.

The purpose seems to be to collect actual information from the person’s friends. So as long as you kill that association (with the fake profile) and report it to Facebook, it will be taken down.

So:
1. Let the person know that his or her account has been cloned – and that it’s probably no big deal.

2. The person should put up his own status stating the fact that the account was cloned by an unauthorized person, and that requests from “that person” are fake and to be avoided or deleted.

3. You and the person involved can each report the issue to Facebook. The profile will be taken down.

I don’t know how to tell the cloned from the real which is why I unfriended her so now I can’t send her a message. Where do I message FB?

And yes, the purpose was to collect not only data – but money. Apparently, this person received $150,000 from Mark Zuckerberg!

Thanks for the help. I got it sorted out. Found her real profile, still friends and others had posted on her wall that she had been cloned.

Since you accepted the friend request from the clone, you are now in danger of being cloned yourself. Tell your friends to watch for it. It happened to me.

In order to minimize the chances of being cloned, it’s best to hide your friends list. They want to clone individuals with a lot of friends.

To hide your friends list, you must do these steps from a computer and not from a mobile device. On a computer, go to your profile. Find the area with your friends. On my PC, it was on the right and down a bit from the top. Put your cursor in the friends list area. A small chevron will appear in the upper right corner of the friends list. Click the chevron. From the choices that appear, choose the one that hides the list from everyone except yourself. I can’t remember now exactly how it was worded. It may have said “me only” or something like that. Doing this will hide your friends list, and ne’er-do-wells won’t want to clone you.

@Hawaii_Jake Thanks. I just did followed your suggestion but since I unfriended the clone, I imagine I’m safe from them.
