Was anyone else massively disappointed with Dunkirk?

Asked by rockfan (14627points) August 3rd, 2017 from iPhone

I usually appreciate Hans Zimmer’s scores, but this is the first time a soundtrack has single handedly ruined a film for me. Dunkirk basically features wall to wall ambient music, and Nolan never lets us feel like the action is taking place in real time. And the characters are so thinly written that I didn’t even care what was happening on screen. The movie looked phenomenal though, but overall it felt extremely accomplished in a clinical sort of way. Rant over.

What did you think of the film? Am I in the minority?

You are as far as I am concerned. I thought it was brilliant and I loved the use of Shepard tones.

I also loved the floating time from different perspectives. So basically, I loved everything about this movie you hated. :-)

Like @Rarebear I thought it was great. I didn’t find the soundtrack distracting. I didn’t mind the shifts in time. And I feel it was a story about the many, rather than the story of specific characters. While it featured individuals, I think they were meant to be indistinct and to represent all the soldiers who were desperate to escape the beaches. I found it very moving.

I thought it a terrific movie, short on dialog, but full of action and conflict. The music was fine.
My only note to the filmmakers would be that the circumstances of that part of the war aren’t explained. It’s easy to watch this and wonder how this circumstance happened.

The ticking noise is what really irritated me, it was meant to make the scenes suspenseful, but all it did was take me out of the film

@rockfan It was an affectation by the director. The ticking was actually the sound recorded from Nolan’s watch. See the link I posted above and they talk about it.

Thanks for the link. But I still think it was a bad decision to have it in the movie lol.

FYI, I felt exactly the same way.. this movie bored me really badly. I went to see it in the movie theater and for the first time ever.. I thought I might just leave because I really didn’t like it. I was so bored. I kept looking around to see if anyone was really into it and there weren’t many people there so I’m not sure. Basically, I felt exactly like you did. I was really sad because I tried to like it and the cinematography was amazing, but it just fell so short. I didn’t feel any connection to any characters. As an audience, I didn’t feel like we got much in the way of context, dialogue, or storyline. It was very dry. It felt like a movie they make you watch in high school about war. I stayed for the entire movie and left feeling like maybe I was just missing something because the reviews were so stellar, so I posted to social media about it, and it turns out I’m not the only one who felt like this. The person I went with also felt the same. We were very disappointed. I felt like it could have been so much better.
