Have you ever seen something strange and mysterious in the night sky?

Asked by LornaLove (10037points) August 15th, 2017

The other day I was reciting a story about my late mother, who had described in detail to me a strange occurrence in the night sky, which she believed until her death, to be a UFO.

It was a pretty fantastic and convincing story.

I happen to live near an alleged UFO hotspot, where hundreds of apparent sightings have occurred along with proof of the sightings, which include videos and photographs. Also, strange loud noises in the sky that are so loud the whole town could hear. Some describe the sound as thousands of ethereal harps playing in out-of-space.

Would you care to share your strange night sky occurrences if any? Or even day time strange happenings that seem to appear from out-of-space.

More than once. But, in each case it turned out to be a helicopter.

I have, more than once. And each time I understood that my mind was playing tricks on me.

I think I’ve described it a few times before on Fluther, but when I was a kid maybe 11 years old I was with someone who saw it to. A very large, close bright moving flash of light overhead for a fraction of a second and gone, with no sound, so fast and unusual that people would not even have it register, or would think they were daydreaming. But we both saw it. Very unsettling and memorable. I’ve never seen anything like that before or since.

I’ve seen some odd lights in the sky too but they weren’t so dramatic or large. Strange movements that I don’t understand (one might possibly have been a drone with a light?), or a brief flash I thought might be a nova but wasn’t reported by astronomers.

As for strange noises and ethereal harps, I have heard some odd things in the night, especially out in the coutryside & wilderness where I wouldn’t’ve expected weird sounds. However, having also been there with some people with unconventional spiritual cosmologies, they have also mentioned views about what those are, including the idea that some of them aren’t actually physical sounds, though they seem like it, but are something else. Some of them may use terms like star being or sasquatch or earth spirit for some of them, though those don’t mean what one might think, and are of course horribly calculated to be well-received by conventional materialist types.

Also mentioned on Fluther before. I saw a strange thing in daytime. It was like a silver tube. Ad I later started researching it online, I saw many like it called “cigar shaped UFO’s”...

I have tried to explain it to myself for years, but no matter my explanation I find it not quite right. The damned thing just didn’t make sense…

My father claimed to have seen a UFO come out of the water in the Pacific Ocean.

My close friend saw something in the sky once too. He couldn’t really explain it.

I believe that people see stuff they can’t explain. It’s hard to say that it’s all nonsense.

@Zaku It’s true, I suppose one cannot describe or explain something that one has no frame of reference for. Hence the unidentified bit, it’s not necessarily about aliens. @MrGrimm888 Yes, It’s interesting how one might attribute nonsense to something, it is just simply something we cannot explain. I love the eeriness about some stories though!

Yeah. I’m not saying that I saw aliens. I saw a “UFO.”

One night some friends and I were out near a body of water when a very charged electrical storm came up. We thought it best to head home, and to get up off the ground in case of lightning strikes. As we were going down the road past the earthen dam, a bright greenish ball of light fell rather slowly out of the low lying clouds and vanished before striking the ground about ½ mile ahead of us. We all saw it. VERY strange! Possibly ball lightning.

I saw a UFO from the window of a plane. It was a late flight, the plane had just a few passengers, and only one was awake. When it happened, the lady came and asked me if I saw it. It was a local flight, volcano in the vicinity was in eruption process (still is). I saw an object, somewhat round in shape, very bright with a purple halo. It came from behind very fast, flew close to the plane ,first to its left, then right (it went below the plane to appear on the other side, then it disappeared in the distance.

I am responsible for more than a few of those strange objects in the sky. If the wind and weather conditions are right, I like to release a couple of paper sky lanterns during parties.

They silently drift off into space over the lake. Magical.

Saw some space junk just a month ago.

When I was quite young I and a group of friends saw quite clearly a silver disc moving across the sky against the wind. When I told my father what I had seen he said it was probably a weather balloon but he hadn’t seen it and I didn’t entirely believe him. This was during the day so maybe not relevant to the question.

Have you ever seen Iridium Flares? They are spectacular in a dark sky. They start out looking like a small star moving in the sky and then get brighter and brighter until they are 10 time brighter than Venus and then quickly fade away.
There are many videos of them. Here is a good example.
It is worth going to the site above and entering your coordinates so you can see the next one in your area. Usually there is at least one good one every week.

I often see the moon in the middle of the day.
There’s probably some explanation for it, but it has always been a mystery to me. (And I like it that way, thank you very much)
Another thing is some moving red light I saw a few times. It travels at night; red, sometimes yellow, blinlking light. Probably an airplane…...or is it…..

The strangest thing I ever saw in the sky was in broad daylight, a giant, very shiny, silver object slowly flying through the air. I must have been the only one to see it, because I watched for news and never there was none.

@YARNLADY Reminds me of a bit of a cringe story. One night a friend and I were travelling along a highway in South Africa. The next moment we saw a huge shiny object much like you described. We looked at each other puzzled. When we got home, I decided to phone the newspapers to see if anyone else had seen it. Since the highway was quite busy. They asked our names etc., and the next morning there was a story on us. We had seen a UFO! Our names quoted and everything. Of course, we were mortified!
