How to get ahead without, or before, a college degree?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24473points) September 4th, 2017

I am wondering if I should go back and take one philosophy university class in January to see If I could learn something for fun pass it. My room and board are free until I am 65 with a small amount to savings. Or until I get a full time job. I’m trying to eat healthier and save money for my future. My workers will help me to sign up for the class and I would like to be certain that I should take it ,before my appointment tomorrow on Tuesday August 5.

Why the heck not? It costs nothing and will get you out of your apartment and in contact with others. You will of course be older than most the other students. Do they offer evening courses? They usually attract an older crowd.

Learning philosophy may change the way you look at the world. Just don’t expect to learn the meaning of life or anything that could be put to practical use.

@LostInParadise I costs me $500 – $1000 a class and books and fees. I can save $150 – $250 a month as long as I don’t go crazy with meat purchases. Most of my non student loan debt will be paid by February.

In the end, it is your call, but it seems like a good deal to me.

By the way, it is September.

A lot of people here have encouraged you over the years to take a class or two to see how you would fare. I suggest it again.

I am not sure what tha has to do with your question “how to get ahead without, or before, a college degree.” That is completely different from if you should take a class. And, if you look back over answers to the questions you have posed before, you will see lots of suggestions.

You asked in July about fun jobs. I don’t think you tried for any of the ones suggested.

@zenvelo I applied to lots of jobs that I felt that I can succeed in. Nothing came from it. tried some of the jobs no luck edit I DID get an interview for McDonalds and they automated the job that I applied for. Cashier is now automated self serve.

To answer the question asked, how to get ahead without a degree, my advice is to show up on time every day that you’re scheduled to work, work hard, don’t be belligerent, do what’s asked of you, don’t engage in gossip or negative talk, and last but not least, be a pleasant coworker (say “good morning,” “have a good night,” “please,” “thank you,” etc.).

Maybe a class in nutrition, or health would be useful for you.

I’m afraid if you took a job, and failed (got fired, or bored, or suffered anxiety) you would lose your benefits.

Taking classes for your own benefit could be fun, and get you out of your daily rut, and could really help you with your over all health and well being.

@RedDeerGuy1 , Are you saying that you are taking a two day first aid class instead of the university class? The first aid class is fine, but take the philosophy class also. It will expand your mind beyond the science fantasy stuff that you are hooked on. I don’t know if it will improve your job prospects, but it will be beneficial to your soul. If it is a philosophy intro class, you will learn about the ideas of Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Hume and Kant, all worth knowing.

@RedDeerGuy1 If I were you I would go to a trade school and either get an associates degree or at least a certificate in something you enjoy doing. At your age and life experience you just need to find a skill and gainful work. It could be anything that accommodates your shut in, sedentary lifestyle because at middle age you’re not likely to change but I would love for you to prove me wrong. If you succeed there then consider a university.

My advice is take a step at a time. Get a part time job, see how you cope, and then once you start working you can decide if you want more hours and to seek a position more fufilling. If you do a good job your employer will give you more and more responsibility. Can the province, or maybe an organization that helps people with your situation, give you help finding a job? In America certain companies have specific programs to encourage hiring people with various disabilities both mental and physical. I don’t get the impression you are violent, that would be a huge red flag for companies. You’re obviously very smart, funny, seems like you could be a great asset to a company. Get a job doing something simple, maybe two days a week, and see how it goes. Just interacting with people and helping them might be very rewarding for you.
