Would you like to believe the evidence that merfolk existed?

Asked by Unofficial_Member (5107points) March 26th, 2018

This video shows us what seems to be a sudden appearance of creature that most of us thought only existed in legend. What if it’s real? What if the government tried to hide it? What if our own disbelieve cause us the reality of this creature? Feel free to be sceptical, of course, but all things aside, would you, yourself, want to believe that such enigmatic creature truly existing but simply less-studied due to their rare appearance?

That’s right but you still can’t stop people from secretly believing, right? Haha. The fact that it once fooled millions of people means that the general masses have high hope of such thing becoming a reality.

Is it real? No.
What if it is real? Then cool!
What if the govt tried to hide it? Big surprise there.
What if our own disbelief (??) the reality of this creature? Maybe you’re saying that since we don’t believe then they don’t exist? If a tree falls in the woods and no one hears it, did it still fall?

I just watched The Shape of Water, so of course I’d love to see mermen, mermaids, talking seals, have a dolphin as my best friend, whales pointing us to treasure or rescuing other animals in need. It’s more than likely not true.

No. There is enough stuff out there that is mind blowingly real that I don’t need to believe in fantasy.

That video is self-described as science fiction, not a real documentary.

Second, though I generally like many traditional fantasy creatures, I’ve never personally been particularly fond of merfolk, and often find them a bit annoying and/or irrationally presented. I have a hard time making much sense of them in a consistent and plausible way, and that tends to diminish my capacity to enjoy postulating or wishing for their existence, or even enjoying many fantasy tales (or games) where they exist.

For the same reason but worse, I dislike centaurs even more, and unicorns are fine. If I could choose one, I’d like dryads to exist (and to be plotting the eradication of harmful industries through dire unstoppable magic).

I think I’d rather believe in Santa Claus.

One thing that The Shape of Water convinced me of is that I never want to have sex with a fishman.

Why didn’t you wait until April 1st to hold us in your thrall?

Ethel or ethyl, you be the judge, it’s a swim/swim svengali situation.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@janbb You’d get gills out of it though! haha Just think, treasure hunting, all kinds of fun things!

janbb's avatar

@KNOWITALL But you do know, I swim underwater at great speed already!

KNOWITALL's avatar

@janbb I did not! I’m an idiot in deep water, scared and will barely brush the ocean at the beach haha. I swam with turtles and water moccasins here in ponds and lakes, but that ocean freaks me out!

I can prove merfolk don’t exist. Every closet I open, everywhere I point. Look! No Mermaids!

Part of me would think it would be fascinating if the story were true, but it is also a bit scary. The still of the creature looks so much like what artists have imagined as well. I really am not sure what to think.

Dutchess_III's avatar

LOL! “Looks like what artists imagined…” which came first, the chicken or the egg?

If you don’t believe that aliens exist, just go into your local grocer’s sea food department and see how the crab legs twitch!

There is no real evidence that merfolk ever existed. Humans and fish cannot interbreed. Mermen are simply products of human imagination, as are other hybrids of humans and other animals and hybrids of other animals besides humans, e.g. sphinx, siren, harpy, satyr, faun, devil, demon, centaur, griffin, hippogriff, etc.

Some people are harassing me as the liberal media does the president. I do not tolerate that. What language is rofloll? I aswsume it is derogatory, since some people hate people with differ3ent opinions. Are you going to stalk me?

ragingloli's avatar

Hybrids do exist.
Donald Drumpf is a Hybrid between an Orangutan and a tub of lard.

SimpatichnayaZhopa's avatar

No, hybrids of humans and other animals do not exist. I have flagged you for falsely claiming I work for Russia that I hate.
