Any Foreign Language Enthusiasts here?

Asked by joaozinhos (96points) March 31st, 2018

I love learning languages. Does anybody else have this hobby? Which languages are you learning and why? What is your objective?

I used to be able to speak Klingon but I forgot all of it.

I’ve studied French, Latin, Italian, Swedish, and a speck of Spanish and German. It’s not really a current hobby but I find the subject fairly interesting.

I have never been very good at learning foreign languages—in fact, in college, I had to write some very lengthy, scholarly dissertations in place of the language requirements.

I would be very interested in learning a Scandinavian language, especially Norwegian which seems best mutually intelligible among the four Scandinavian languages—and I am also interested in Yiddish because of my family’s Jewish heritage and it seems kind of exotic and unusual to me. I like Friesian languages because they are close to early English and to Dutch and the North German and Danish provinces. I am interested in the Celtic languages as well—though again, my ability to learn the languages even though I have studied the languages and cultures extensively has not helped me with learning the languages.

Most people all over the world understand some English, and I believe that English will eventually become the universal language. But I find many languages quaint, charming, and dripping with the true essence of the indigenous cultures they stem from, so I hate to see them disappearing. Would like to learn Norwegian, Yiddish, and some Frisian language.

As for the fantasy languages, I find the Elven tongues very interesting, and of the Star Trek languages Vulcan seems well developed and worth learning—but I’d learn Elven first

I’m speaking English. Is it enough? :D

This joke is going to fly over a lot of people’s head. Not many people understands the context anyway.

Because of how complicated and annoying it is^^?

Mimishu1995's avatar

Absolutely. I’m waiting for someone to explain it to our newbie. Beside it isn’t fun anymore if I do the explaning :P

Yes, I am a foreign language enthusiast. Right now, I would like to learn Greek. Does anyone know of a website or podcast for Greek similar to Japanesepod101.com for Japanese?

Eventually I would also like to learn Croatian, Portuguese, and maybe Slovenian.

Here on Fluther, we have unfortunately lost several linguaphiles. They have not accessed this site in a long time.

Do computer languages count? I taught myself Python, which is not saying much, since the language is so darn intuitive. I have looked at some of Python’s libraries for machine learning. That takes a bit of effort, because you have to master, because you have to have familiarity with the underlying theory.

I have also been struggling on and off to learn Haskell. I doubt that I will ever use it, but it gives a different view of programming.

I love studying languages, yes. Currently I’m not studying any, but I’ve learned some French (class), Japanese (class), Vietnamese (just from local friends) and studied Cherokee one summer. Italian is up next at some point.
