How can one spin, poor attention to detail, for a job search to come out positive?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24473points) August 28th, 2018

Where could one get a job without this quality? Is there a place where one could fit in without a good attention to detail? Some place where the opposite is required? Like maybe having a job where you have to let things slide?

You could describe yourself as a “big picture strategic thinker”. Of course, that would have to be demonstrably true.

My guess is anything at a low-end, starter job is one where detail matters.

There are a lot of people that are detailed orientated and others are Generalized instead.
There are jobs that require a Generalized or broad view.
Perhaps that is the type of job that you would like instead.
Example: a concept designer in many careers comes up with the ideas and the details are drawn up by the detailed orientated individual.

No, even “big picture” idea jobs require attention to details, just different details. All jobs require paying attention to the details that are necessary to that particular job, even flipping burgers, or mopping floors, or picking up trash on the side of the road.

But some details are broader than others.
I was an inspector for department of transportation, bridge and highway division.
I had manuals which outlined specific percentages for rock sand ratios, ppsi of pressure in break results of concrete bars, etc.
I was responsible for collecting tonnage receipts for loads delivered.
All the things required precision.
Garbage collectors only need hit the open part of the truck.
Shelf stockers only need to get products on the right shelf.

Mark Twain was thought to have a poor attention to detail. I just heard it on PBS documentary tonight. So writer seems like a good choice for career.

For what it’s worth, most people who claim to be detailed oriented are lying. I’ve even seen typos on resumes from applicants who say they have high attention to detail… when I see this on a resume, I usually disregard it at best. What I’m looking for in an employee is passion for the job. In my case that’s healthcare. I want employees who love patient care and helping others, not simply chasing down a paycheck.

Say that you are good at getting the big picture of things. Explain how you are skillful in getting others to collect and summarize the relevant data and that you are adept at using this information to make a high level decision.

I would question the assertion that a writer need not pay attention to details. There have been some stream of consciousness writers, but I would think that most would agree that a writer’s job is not so much writing as it is rewriting. Link

In general, getting results requires effort. You can put in the effort at a detail level or at a higher level, but not much happens unless you work at it.
