What do you make of Trump's decision to postpone the State of the Union speech until after the shutdown?

Asked by LostInParadise (31917points) January 24th, 2019

It caught me off guard. I thought he would find some other location for delivering the speech. On the surface, it looks like he is caving in. In the tweet where he made his announcement, he did not say anything negative about Pelosi. He said that postponing the speech was her “prerogative”. Is this really Trump writing or a member of his staff? Is the word prerogative even in his vocabulary? Why hasn’t Trump made up a derogatory nickname for her, as he does for everyone else he disagrees with? Is he intimidated by a woman? It seems so unlike him.

I heard he called her Nancy.
“Nancy Pelosi, or, as I call her; Nancy.”
Pretty sweet ~

Pelosi knew she had him by the short and curlies, the only real way to get his attention. Pelosi knows that his weak point is craving a national TV audience.

The President doesn’t get to choose where the SOTU is given. He can address Congress, or he can send it in writing.

It’s my opinion that it finally got through to Trump that Pelosi was doing everybody a favor by avoiding the spectacle of ALL the hooligans being panned by cameras in the midst of the shutdown. The state of the Union is SHUTDOWN. It’s a situation that does nobody good. Trump may take the fall for the debacle, but the crowd of multimillionaires assembled with grave looks on their mugs only serves to emphasize the ironic plight of their victims.

If he really seriously considered making a SOTU speech somewhere else…like in the Fox News headquarters or the Kremlin….and for whatever reason suddenly changed his mind….well, someone’s brain cells seem to be working properly.

Bit disappointing though, to miss another chance of watching the orange creature make a fool of itself delivering the speech while wearing a MAGA hat.

A momentary lapse in the madness. A passing instant of sense. Remember what they used to say about a stopped clock, back when clocks used to have hands?

I wasn’t planning on watching it

He often refers to Charles Schumer and Nancy Pelosi as “Chuck & Nancy.” He’s trying to dismiss their maturity and experience, thus demeaning or infantilizing them. It’s as if they’re a comedy team – Bob & Ray, Amos & Andy, Cheech & Chong, etc.

I think it’‘s a win for Pelosi and I’m glad I don’t have to hear the fall-out from another bloviating speech.

It’s a loss for everybody. This whole thing is a shitshow and this pissing match between Congress and the President is going to plunge our economy into recession.

He hopes to make a victory speech , that“s why he wants to wait until everybody else starves and caves in.
