Does Chinese New Year have any significance in your life?

Asked by Unofficial_Member (5107points) February 4th, 2019

It’s officially Chinese New Year now. Not sure if I should say “Happy Chinese New Year!” as I believe that not many people here seem to care about or celebrating that. Anyway, folks, what do you usually do during this Chinese Holiday? Does this holiday affect people around you and in your community?

None. Zip. Nada.

And this year being the Year of the Pig, it isn’t even Kosher.

It’s the year of the pig???

Does this mean we have to barbeque every day?

I just gave a heart emoji to a Facebook friend who posted about the new year. She is Chinese-American.

I was in NYC the year of the dragon and my sister lives in China town so I just happen to catch some of the festivities.

I think it’s great to celebrate all the different nationality and cultures in America. The Asian American club here is having a big party, and I’d love to go, but I have schedule conflict.

I knew a Taiwanese couple who were both born in a pig year. They had pig decorations all over the apartment. At the door you had to change into slippers – specifically pig slippers.

I have never made it to the New Year parade here, even though we have two in town. They are this Saturday and Sunday. Maybe I can finally do this.

Haha you’re all so sweet.

@elbanditoroso No New Year’s peking duck for you! Haha

@Dutchess_lll I don’t think it’s the traditional culture to barbeque during this event, we usually have big parties and eat out more often (preferably in high-end restaurants since this is yearly event). Eat, eat, and more eating. And give money to children. That’s what we like to do.

Right now I’m attending a New Year meal after visiting the ancestors’ graves. I’m not so excited about being surrounded by fake people though, I’m more interested that I don’t have to work :)

@Mimishu1995 May I ask why did you mean by “fake people”?

Mimishu1995's avatar

@Unofficial_Member I mean my acquaintances. Some of them are narcissists and get off on people’s drama. I’m cool with the meals. I just don’t like sitting with them in the same room.

My Unitarian congregation is having a Chinese themed luncheon after services this Sunday. Otherwise, just knowing that Chinese restaurants have special menus.

I am not personally affected by it other than I live in an area with a large Asian population so people all around are celebrating in different fashions. Kids are all excited about getting their red envelopes. Local restaurants are having New Years specials.

The big parade here will be on the 23rd.

It’s a big deal here in Hawaii. There are parades, street parties, and fireworks. We’re having a party in the office this morning.

A bit, as my girl friend is Chinese. I was in China for the Chinese New Year last year, which was quite something. This year I am in Scotland where there have been a few special events taking place.
