Retail advice question: Where can I find comforters without all the other crap?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33170points) October 16th, 2019

I’m looking for bright colored down (or fake down) comforters.

All I can find are sets—throw pillows, shams, bedskirts, and all sorts of other accoutrements that I have no interest in (and will throw away or give away).

Can you point me to stores that sell comforters singly, not as part of a set? All the places I checked – Overstock, Wayfair, Amazon, Target, WalMart – they’re all selling sets.

L.L. Bean or perhaps Vermont Country Store.

Walmart sells comforters without anything else. I’m sure Amazon does, too, if you put the filter on (click off “sets” or something like that).

Macys. Some come with shams/pillow cases, but otherwise many nice comforters are sold seperately.

If you search “comforter”, it pulls up all the comforter sets. But if you search “down comforter” or “down alternative comforter”, you’ll get better results.

You know I’m a Costco girl. Costco sells comforters without anything else.

Also, you might check “dorm comforters” and that may bring up the comforter without all the other stuff, when you search on Amazon or other sites.

(Also, Costco has an amazing return policy.)

Try The Company Store, LL Bean, Eddie Bauer. They are likely to have them.

Here are the down and down alternative comforters on Amazon. When you’re shopping for this type of item, they are almost always white. Some come in colors.

Because white comforters are so common, you could get a white one and use a duvet cover for the color.

Looking now at @Hawaii_Jake‘s link, I see many are called “duvet insert”.

I know about the all white or pastel colored ones, I saw those. But I find duvet covers to me a major hassle, which is why I wanted a standalone comforter in the first place.

Company Store – I only found sets. Same with LL Bean.

If you’re looking for down comforters, I like Pacific Coast and Warm Things .

What many people don’t realize about Costco is, most of what’s on their website you don’t need to be a member to purchase. If you don’t like it, you can just return it in any Costco store or mail it back.

@elbanditoroso Your OP states you’re looking for a bright colored comforter. I doubt you’re going to find a comforter in a bright color that does not also include matching pillow shams. That’s the nature of the business. I used to be the area manager for a bedding store chain. Everything other than plain are sold in sets. Literally everything.

@Hawaii_Jake That’s what I am seeing, and what you say makes sense. Sadly.

I guess I would rather by a comforter and two shams than a comforter with three or four extra pieces.

Are you against buying a white comforter and a duvet cover for the bright? That I think you could easily find.

All my colorful comforters were sold separately, they are Calvin Klein, and I think also either a Macy’s or Bloomingdales brand.

@JLeslie my experience with duvets and duvet covers is that the blanket does not stay contiguous to the corners of he duvet – it travels and you end up with uneven coverage.

I forgot IKEA. IKEA sells comforters by themselves. They have a lot of linens and also duvets covers, towels, pillow cases (for decorative pillows), decorative pillows, all kinds of stuff.

elbanditoroso's avatar

@jca2 I’ll head downtown to Ikea over the weekend. I saw something passable on Walmart’s website last night too. I have an idea of what to do next. Thanks all.

jca2's avatar

@elbanditoroso: Check Walmart online too. They have a bigger selection than in the store. I sometimes order from their online and do site to store shipping.

Sagacious's avatar

@jca2 I haven’t figured out why anyone would choose shipping to the store rather than shipping to their home. You said you do that. Is it just so it will not sit on y our porch? I only did it once and it was because I ordered something that would melt and I live in Florida so didn’t want it to melt.

JLeslie's avatar

^^Usually ship to store is free shipping.

jca2's avatar

@Sagacious: @JLeslie nailed it. It’s usually free. If I’m not buying the minimum for free shipping, site to store is free usually anyway.

Also, fortunately I have a job where I can get packages shipped to, but if I didn’t, and the packages had to come to my house, I used to have problems where packages wouldn’t be left in the right place, or you hear about thieves stealing packages from doorsteps. So the site to store takes care of that problem.

If I’m going to be in the store anyway to buy other stuff, I just pick the package up when I’m there. I do it sometimes with Walmart because it’s free and I’ll be there anyway buying other stuff.
