How much would it have cost the USA if its government immediately had restricted travel to and from China the same day Covid 19 was on the news?

Asked by mazingerz88 (28823points) March 26th, 2020 from iPhone

And not just China. Other potential countries too that could have had people with the virus coming into the US.

Would it cost 2 trillion dollars?

I don’t have that algorithm.

I have no idea.
And I don’t think they really knew how bad this was, even after seeing the contagion and death rate explode over there.
I think all the countries dropped the ball big time on this.
I hope North America can recover from this and I hope it doesn’t take any loved ones from my family sorry to sound selfish.

We are hoping with you.
Soon you will be watching the sunset with Mrs. Squeeky, and it will be like a bad dream. You will kiss her, and tell her how happy you are that you both survived, and the horror is past.

All I can say, is what I have been saying.
There is FAR too much traveling, that isn’t needed. Many business related meetings, could be done with technology, rather than moving so many people around…

That being said.
We can’t just ban travel from somewhere, every time there is a new disease/virus. Often times, they are products of their environment (like malaria,) or the local culture, or living conditions. Sometimes, it depends on how the disease/virus, is transmitted.
In such cases, the disease/virus, will not be a serious threat to the majority of US citizens…

CV-19 spread so quickly, that there wasn’t much time to do much about it. However. The US government, REALLY could have done SO much more than they did/are doing…

Cost us? How much will the current measures cost or save us? It’s a pointless exercise speculating on the current reality, and a total waste of time to extend that exercise to “what if.” The costs either way are incalculable. The question shouldn’t be how many might die from the disease, or how much it will cost, but rather how many will die due to insufficient management of the rates of infection.

When was it first in the news? December? Who knows just how much it would have cost. December or January maybe would not be so terrible in terms of retail if we are just talking about not accepting imports and stopping planes coming in from China and any other hot spot. Even though customers are still buying in December for Christmas, the stores already have received the good from importers by then for the most part.

I’m not sure when on the calendar you are considering cut this Q.

It could have broken us as a country but how many lives could have been saved? Even if we only had seniors quarantined from January, some could have avoided death. It haunts me.

Typo: not cut this Q, should be for this Q.

I just remember reading about Wuhan around December maybe? Not sure.

But still…our taxes pay for fellow Americans whose jobs are specifically to watch out for exactly these sort of things! WHO DROPPED THE BALL?

Someone did and this person should fuckin resign if he or she could actually feel any shame or remorse.

@mazingerz88 I agree.

And I can’t help but recall hearing all my life how the seniors were going to bankrupt us as a country, as they age, via SS costs and healthcare costs.

mazingerz88's avatar

If that was Obama in the WH, I’d expect him to resign. The buck stops with him.

He should fire those people too who were supposed to raise the preventive alarm on him and then he himself should vacate that office.

If he was warned but he didn’t do anything then those people shouldn’t be fired.

@mazingerz88 I could start a partisan debate on New Rochelle but I won’t. Let’s just agree for once it’s a horrible outcome.

As far as I can tell the first death in China was reported Jan 11, 2020. Trump banned travel to and from China Jan 31, 2020 and he was roundly criticized for it. I don’t see how he could have done it much sooner. Remember that the dems were suing Trump in court for any travel bans and had an injunction against him. Not to mention they were still irrationally trying to impeach him. Hindsight is always 20/20 but I think the response was far better than anyone could have foreseen. Remember also that china was telling us and the WHO that the virus was not transmitted person-to-person.

The pandemic response team that was created under Obama. If part of their job was to simply wait for news from China regarding outbreaks before doing any advanced preventive measures…then that team is practically useless. A waste of American dollars.

Our rights and freedoms as citizens of the United States. Some of our citizens were already in that part of the world. Should we lock them out?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Why would it cost us anything at all?

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@kritiper Good question but yes, quarantine for 14 days like one of our members here did a Travis AFB.
