The first book after RotJ is Truce at Bakura. But you might also be interested in Shadows of the Empire, which occurs in between ESB and RotJ. If you want to jump straight into the New Jedi Order (which is sort of the main big story arc thing that’s happened), the first book of that is Vector Prime. But that starts several years after RotJ. Probably the most well-regarded EU stuff is the Thrawn trilogy.

Of course, there are also random trilogies that you can read if you’re interested in specific characters, such as the Han Solo Trilogy (which I recommend following with the Corellian Trilogy, even though it happens years later) and the Bounty Hunter Wars.

I don’t know as much about PT and pre-PT stuff (except that if you read the New Jedi Order series, you should also read Rogue Planet at some point).

I forgot to say what my favorite was. I’m not really sure. I liked the Corellian Trilogy quite a bit. Maybe that.

I thought the Solo trilogy and the Corellian Trilogy were a waste of time.

The Best stuff I’ve read is Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn trilogy. Heir to the Empire is the first of these books. It is probably a large reason for the resurgence of Star Wars popularity throughout the 90s. Timothy Zahn later wrote a few sequels to his original trilogy that are also very well written. I enjoyed the Truce at Bakura and some of the other books but Zahn’s are the best.

Heir to the Empire essentially lays the groundwork for the entire Expanded Universe. It takes place 5 years after ROTJ and introduces Mara Jade, one of the best female characters ever (and a character whose Expanded Universe role becomes more and more important in much later titles—I don’t want to say too much). It also introduced Grand Admiral Thrawn, Leia and Han married and preggers, many baddies, and the planet Coruscant (which we finally saw in the Star Wars prequel movies).

The main reason I enjoyed the Corellian Trilogy was because of the Solo kids.

As for the Thrawn trilogy, I haven’t actually read it. You’re right about its importance, though. I just somehow never got around to it. My percentage of non-Star Wars reading kept growing until I wasn’t reading anymore Star Wars stuff… and that happened before I got around to reading the Thrawn trilogy.

If you’re still taking answers, I found the Jedi Apprentice Series to be pretty interesting. Revolves around Qui Gon and Obi Wans Padawan-Jedi relationship. It’s aimed more towards the younger audience but still holds appeal to the more mature. Good luck getting your hands on them, though.

All of the stories in the “Young Jedi Nights” series are good
