Should I/ Do you tip people who bring food to my/your car at Sonic Drive-In?

Asked by buster (10274points) October 29th, 2008

I know they make minimum wage or better and not a waiter/waitress minimum wage. If you do tip at Sonic or similar drive-in style joints how much do you leave?

Sonic used to be one of my favorite fast food establishments before I stopped eating fast food. In my opinion, the tipping is a courtesy but because they bring your food to you (in essence waiting on you), I don’t mind giving a tip. My standard gratuity to them was usually one or two dollars.

Yes you are and it is stupid. I give them a buck but I don’t like doing it, especially when they closed down all the drive-through windows so there is no longer a choice.

Depends how good looking they are.

I hate when the ugly girl/pimply guy brings me a cherry limeade.

It just doesn’t taste as good, right?

I give a dollar to them. What I can’t stand is how other places have these tip jars sprouting up everywhere.

I see in my local Subway sandwich shop that they now have a tip jar. For the person who assembles my sandwich? Or for the person who rings it up? Now I gotta tip these people?

My family tips…one to two dollars.

Mmmmmmmm Sonic Chilidogs! I can’t wait long enough for my Sonic Chilidogs to park outside or go inside for them. I always go the quickest route – drivethrough. I realize I’m missing out on the Sonic experience but I can’t wait for my Sonic Chilidogs. Sorry you Sonic employees!

Unless you want to get your lazy ass out of the car, yes, you should tip them. I’m a good tipper…I tip depending on what my bill is. Even for a drive-in.

I’m a good tipper too, especially since I was a bartender or server for almost a decade. I lived solely off tips and had a busy job where I waited on people for long periods of time for that 15 to 20 percent. They don’t do that at sonic. It’s not about being cheap.

The last I had heard was that the Sonic folks weren’t supposed to accept tips. I got this info from an employee of ours who used to be a manager at a Sonic. I asked him this very question, and he told me that while the policy was “no tips” as they were paid minimum wage, but no one was going to hunt down employees if they got one.

I never asked him if this was a company-wide policy or if this was something local.

I have assumed this was a company-wide policy, however, I just found this article published Oct. 28, 2008:

sonic paying new carhops tip wage

So apparently they used to pay employees minimum wage (plus tips), but are now going to tip wage at some locations.

And I never knew that Sonic was a publicly traded stock (SONC).

We don’t have Sonics here. We’ve got A & W Drive Inn’s tho.
Anyone who’s ever worked in any retail/food type of job can relate to bad pay and long hours. That’s why I tip.

I tip at drive-throughs, but I’m pretty cheap and only tip 2% of the bill to the guy in the drive through window. I don’t know why there’s so many people who don’t knpow what a tip is. I guess tipping is not widely known by the younger generation.
